This has to be a Borat stunt for a future documentary. As long as Republicans are against building up within government as opposed to tearing down institutions or socially regressing towards policies seen during pre-70s civil rights era, they will choose populism over traditional conservatism because it’s the easier of the two in terms of platform (anything goes), simplicity (anything else goes), and greed (anything profitable goes to highest bidder). Con principles was dealt a huge knockout blow after Bush that gave their believers concussion grade amnesia. The notion of the article is that con leaders can flip the switch back to Old Normal when they have spent little to nothing messaging whata new intellectual Con framework would be. Paul Ryan took a stab at it with spreadsheets and wonkish certainty, except reality set in from the fact that it takes a ton of investment, time, and messaging to hash something out to discuss and forge again. As everything is an existential crisis with the con base (...destroying America!!), policy debate is silenced (censuring of anti-Trump Republicans) or held in secret through the iron fist of Unity. Republicans took the easy way to power, ignored demographics and doubled down from our past sins. They have no one else to blame from Trump (who did win once), yet they’re desperately denying rock bottom and begin anew.
I just saw RNC Chair Rona McDaniel on Meet the PRess and she brought up Louis Farrakhan and claiming that Democrats don't speak out against Louis Farrakhan so it's unfair to criticize Republicans for not doing enough to counter extremists..
Whatever happened to doing the right thing or being the better person? The Republican Party has given up on these things preferring to wallow in the mud in a race to the bottom. We’re down to our government and leaders saying “They did it, too!” and it sickens me. Rona McDaniel wants us to believe extremism in the Republican Party is OK because the other side can’t keep their house clean.
Republicans apparently support whatever keeps them in power no matter how contrary it may be to their principles, ......and who can say what those are now... guns, abortion and free speech or the right to wave a gun in your face while screaming about abortion. I can’t tell any longer.
This is the part where @Os Trigonum chimes in with a meme saying "So your saying what about Louis Farrakhan" Right?
