One of the scientists that made the black hole pictures a reality. And yes, I would...

I think she has a new job at Cal Tech now. Impressive trajectory for a young scientist, for sure.
Teaching a lot of female science students, I can tell you these kinds of exemplary people really do make a difference. I love it. It's not just "oh look, a woman is involved in cutting edge science," but it's also, "oh look, a woman is involved in cutting edge science and she doesn't have to look like and act like a guy."

Article covering these images from a proposed version of the EHT that involves 3 telescopes out of Earth's orbit.

    https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2019/05/190506124118.htm

This video covers 7 telescopes of the future in the field of astronomy and the interesting challenges in IT just to transfer hundreds of petabytes of data gathered by these instruments. It's videos like these that give me hope for the future of humanity though. The level of precision and detail these instruments gather is something I never thought I'd see in my lifetime and yet here we are.

Also while we're still discussing the black hole photo, here's a very interesting podcast interview with theoretical physicist Leonard Susskind. He is one the chief contributors to the holographic principle and was good friends with Richard Feynman. The discussion on quantum computers and all the research in error correcting to hopefully engineer up to a 400 qubit quantum computer was interesting to listen to.

Cool short video about the first black hole discovered -- nice animation to visualize what's going on.

Black hole: First picture of Milky Way monster

This is the gargantuan black hole that lives at the centre of our galaxy, pictured for the very first time.

Known as Sagittarius A*, the object is a staggering four million times the mass of our Sun.

What you see is a central dark region where the hole resides, circled by the light coming from super-heated gas accelerated by immense gravitational forces.

For scale, the ring is roughly the size of Mercury's orbit around our star.

That's about 60 million km, or 40 million miles, across.
