It may ice over some even if it is running. It's done that before. Have to make sure the arthritic dog doesn't take a tumble into the pool as she's done that a few times before thankfully in the Summer. I used my bare hand to empty the skimmer basket as the handle broke and I have to pry it out. My arm got wet past my elbow. And, it really did feel crazy...almost as if nails were being pounded into my arm. I just couldn't imagine going into the cold drink full body. I would think the dog may just die if it fell in. I couldn't imagine what those people on the Titanic went through when they went in. Ouch.
I'm in Austin. If it gets down to 11 then that's basically death for my mandarin and lemon trees. I'll try to cover them and figure out some kind of heat. I think my blackberries will be ok. Maybe I will just light them on fire to keep them warm ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Update from FW: 6 fatalities 36 people transported to hospital Total of 65 people treated at area hospitals Over 100 vehicles involved
I'm sure you know to cover the outdoor spigots, too. I just checked and they're showing a low of -1 and high of 13 in my area... I'm praying for my pipes. *sigh*
Are we supposed to put sock puppets on our sprinkler heads? I can't seem to get the cover off the boxes in my front yard. It's like they expanded and don't want to budge. I tried using a knife around the edges to cut through the mud that filled in the cracks. But, nope. I was going to try to find the valve for the sprinkler system and turn it off...assuming it isn't frozen in place already. I can get to the main water cutoff valve if needed, though. I can't remember a time it was going to be this cold in Texas.
My lemon tree (in Houston) already has a ton of flower buds and even a few flowers blooming. It's really confused.
yeah, one of my peach trees actually started budding last week. same thing happened last year...we got a late freeze and it ruined my crop. austin is supposed to hit mid-teens sunday and single digits on monday. ive been here 25 years and i know its gotten into the teens, but never below that. ive only been in single digit weather once in my life - january in chicago. it was so cold that it was funny - we were just laughing at how f***ing ridiculous it was.
I'm assuming everything's in the ground? Blackberries should be fine, no idea about citrus, my meyer lemon's in a big pot in the greenhouse for the winter. Thankfully none of my peaches/plums/apricots/have started budding yet. Looks like it won't get much above freezing if at all until next Thursday or so. Yay. I ****ing hate plumbing.
Cleveland in February when I went to the the all star game in 1997, no joke. The wind coming off the River was ridiculous and I have been in Chicago during the winter. I was kinda looking forward to actually wearing a coat for a few days but now I am worried about the pipes and the power going out.
So I'm going to test out this idea I saw tomorrow. Get 2 ceramic pots and a good size candle. Put the candle inside the pot. Light the candle and put the other pot on top and tape them together. It's supposed to be a decent little space heater to put around trees after you cover them with minimal fire risk. I'll see how shitty this idea is tomorrow.
