After yesterday's Superbowl, and countless other examples, I find it hard to believe that reffing will ever get it's **** together in any sport. I think using AI to ref games with possible human referee oversight is the way to go. It would keep a firm, consistent box drawn around the ruleset of each sport for all players. Lord knows the NBA needs it worst of all.

    What say you?

They rigged the bowl too. Damn, I didn't watch but find it very suspicious a 43 year old QB is winning and still playing.

In baseball I think its easily doable. In football and basketball its impossible because every play is physical and probably can be called a foul. That is why ref effect the game so much..

Baseball absolutely, also tennis, but not sure how it would work in contact sports.

Baseball needs it badly for balls and strikes. It's a horrible look when in the playoffs at home you can see the ball entirely fall outside the zone and be called a strike, or vice versa. Just get it right.

They should use technology to enhance the ref's ability to call the games, but a complete replacement doesn't seem right.

Who would Gordon yell at if there weren't any refs?

I would like the replay center to have more power, give the refs earpieces so they can have seamless communications with them on the fly to overturn bad calls, or alert them of obvious, crucial missed calls.

They need to replace players with AI, too. Why the heck do we need humans for sports?

    100% agree.

You can tell that NBA coaches have their players find out early in the game what will get called or not, by this set of refs.

Last minute of a NBA game? Forget about it.

As a fan, I wish that the rules would be consistently called game by game. As much as I want that, I don't know how you would get it. Could AI really figure out a flop? a charge? I doubt it. But AI could figure out traveling, 3 second violations, hand checking, palming, ...

Flops are physics. I'm not too familiar with what is done for motion capture for basketball, but in baseball, they can track where a players arms and legs are. With that information if applied to basketball along with body weight, it should be easy for highly technical people (maybe grab the guys doing the physics for baseball) to calculate how much actual force one player is applying to another player. If a player flies away from contact at a greater velocity than the force applied by the other player...flop. 3 seconds should be easy and completely automated. Traveling....that probably can be automated. Handchecking..automated with oversight. Palming is likely more difficult. It is just a matter of getting enough cameras, having someone program the physics, and then calibrate it with what amount of contact is permissible and what isn't.
