"The Case for Boycotting the 2022 Winter Olympics in China":

    https://reason.com/volokh/2021/02/06/the-case-for-boycotting-the-2022-winter-olympics-in-china/

    excerpt:

As the Washington Post recently reported, human rights activists and others are advocating a boycott of the upcoming 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, China, because of the Chinese government's many egregious atrocities, including its detention of hundreds of thousands of Uighurs in concentration camps, brutal repression in Hong Kong, and much else.

Calls for a boycott are justified. The present Chinese government isn't just any dictatorship. It is one of the worst human rights abusers in the entire world. And there is no other way to prevent the Olympic Games from becoming a propaganda showcase for this regime. Chinese dissident and human rights lawyer Teng Biao recently called for a boycott for that very reason. We should listen to him.

I hate seeing countries like Russia and China host Olympics.

Xi’s genocidal regime should be shunned by every democratic government in the world. I’m all for it.

Not sure what this accomplishes other than to penalize the athletes who train all their lives for this moment.

The Chinese gov't sucks. Boycotting the Olympics isn't going to change that.

People said this when the pandemic shut everything down. But it was for the ‘greater good’. Maybe it’s not that different here?

Hitler promoted Aryan superiority in the "Nazi" Olympic. African America Jesse Owens won four gold medals. So much for superiority.

One was done to save lives.

The other is done to make a political statement.

You sure it's not that different here?

What about the 80 and 84 boycotts?

I knew someone who had been set to go to the 1980 Olympics in Judo and didn't go because of the boycott. He never got another opportunity and has been bitter at Jimmy Carter ever since then.

Olympics don't even have the same meaning any more since professionals compete.

The idea is to further awareness and not provide the economic benefits that follow (Being a host I think is actually a negative economically, but because of costs that would be sunk by the time the games happen).

The athletes are definitely the ones that suffer, and ultimately it should be their decision.

They can just send in Les Alexander and he can just steal all the gold metals and bring it back to Florida where it belongs

Only the ones that seek publicity and redemption are willing to pay for it.

The boycott is not a good thing, but better than spending a few trillion more on "modernizing" our world ending nuclear arsenal. Just say "no" to regime change wars close enough to China to get us involved in proxy wars. Even Nixon was a fan of keeping calm and constructive engagement.

Not a fan of Chinese authoritarianism, but we have our faults, too. 1 million dead in Iraq and the creation of ISIS, Lybyan chaos and slave markets.

No US Olympics or Western European Olympics have been boycotted for these type of atrocities.
