The 13 million number is what Cots says. Fangraphs/roster resource has the current estimate at 201 million. So only 9 million left. Either way, I don't expect them to use up all the space under the tax in the offseason. They will save some room for potential deadline deals. I doubt they bring in JBJ but certainly wouldn't complain. If they do have 13 million left I would like Pillar and another reliever like Jeffress, Greene, or a flyer on Kela. Then save the remaining room for the deadline.

 

Cots appears to be going with the bare minimum number of players, so I would $2-3M for that. Besides that, difference appears to be confusion on how Pressly's extension was finalized.

 

Yea I saw that. According to USA Today and the AP that lower number on Cots is correct. They say they agreed to a 3 year deal including his 2019 2.9 million dollar salary. So they say it was 3 years 20.4 million making the AAV 6.8 million. However, other sites say the new deal was just the 2 years at 17.5 million making the AAV 8.75.

 

Ozuna to the Braves may be the best signing of the offseason. Good value and a huge impact for their lineup. And I think the Brantley signing might be a lite version of that. Without Brantley the Astros lineup doesn't look nearly as deep.

 

I actually want to see what the kid can do, you can’t teach that kind of speed. Let him start the season in CF, there are enough bats in the line up to give him a shot.

I think there's a pretty good chance that it is true, but Mallex Smith lead the league in 2019 and was replacement level, so I'm not sure it means much.

 

Myles Straw had a higher OBP in the minors then Correa, Altuve, Bregman, and Tucker. Alvarez beat out Straw by .001 in OBP in the minors.

 

I agree. Bat him 9th and let him run the bases with the top of the lineup after him. The lineup is more than strong enough and he’ll get pitches to hit.

 

Olney rumoring Astros as favorite for Bradley. Not sure how they could make that money work unless they extended Verlander to lower his AAV.



I am not polished on how luxury tax amounts are calculated but I wonder if Houston could sign Bradley to a backloaded longer term deal (possibly with bonuses and vesting options) to make for a really low 2021 tax hit.

 

Of the young position players that might be on Houstons opening day roster, I am more excited to see what Abraham Toro might be able to do over 400+ PA than Myles Straw. To me Straw is pretty easy to project and it seems really really unlikely he becomes more than a fringey everyday CF. But I think Toro has potential to be a good everyday 3B or super sub who plays 1B/2B/3B/RF/LF and can post a 115 wRC+.

 

That reads to me that agents feel like they need him the most, not that they're the most likely to sign him.

Getting creative could work. They could do something like 4/24, with year 1 being $12 million and $4M/year after an opt out. If he hits well he can go back for a bigger deal, and if he sucks he can stay on at 4th OF salary. I believe the cap hit would be only $6M for this theoretical situation.

 

That’s a solid deal for both sides imho. Would even be willing to stretch it to have $10M/yr over the first 2 years then an opt out with $2M/yr over the last 2 years if he opts in. Seems like the league office might flag that though.
