I hated that Gomez deal the second it happened... felt same way about Gattis deal... folty had 1 or 2 dominant years and Gattis was just a guy they could have signed similar for minimum...
Great point... still possible he learns it somewhere in Houston system higher up but great point on similarities to mike scott...
Another Gomez/Fiers thing is if the Gomez trade to NYM(I believe)didn't fall apart, it would have meant the Astros not acquiring Gomez and Fiers.
Alternate history: Biggio/Bagwell astros hit the same in post season as they did in the regular season. Who knows how many additional championships this would result in?
Folty has been basically s*** for the Braves. We got a player that greatly contributed to our success in 17. 2018 was an outlier for him. I'm ok with that trade.
What if Bill Virdon took out Nolan Ryan in the 8th of Game 5 of the 1980 NLCS and the Astros don't give up that 5-2 lead with six outs left to go to the World Series.
I said one or two... foltynewicz' best season was better than gattis... Gattis is a likeable guy but he was just a guy... like chris carter...
He hit a HR in game 7 against the Yankees to score our first run of the night in the 6th. If he doesn’t hut that no guarantee we win that game and advance to the Series. with perfect hindsight knowing Gattis was sort of a JAG and Folty was awesome a couple years I make that trade 100/100.
And what would the person in his place had done? Better? Maybe folty having his dominant year at the right time in Houston means another ring? We'll never know... again, I like Gattis but there are a lot of guys who play bad defense and can hit .260 with 20 bombs... i just think they overpaid for him thinking he was an everyday catcher...
And because we'll "never know", we have the ability to deal in facts and the fact is, they won their only World Series with Gattis in the lineup.
Maybe I'm mistaken but i thought Gattis was a bench player by then? We'll also never know if they had resigned the unit or beltran if they win the series... that's the point of the thread... We just have a difference of opinion... nothing wrong with that... Gattis was more consistent. I just feel it's easier to find a dh who can hit like Gattis than a pitcher who has 1 great season and a couple of awful ones... there's a reason folty is still in the league and gattis isn't...
He was a part timer. 300+ plate appearances. What we factually know is that the Astros won the World Series with Gattis on the team. And, as mentioned earlier, he had a huge HR in hand 7 of the ALCS. What we don't know is what would have happened had Gattis not been on the team. I'll take the known fact (Astros won World Series) over speculation as to what may have happened.
