Surprised to see Brian T. Smith post this. Think the single biggest problem with the franchise has been Easterby running the organization without interference.
100% this. Easter Bunny tried his BS youth pastor crap on a roomful of professional athletes and it failed. So he brings in a black guy who played in the league and who's been in NFL locker rooms to do his character building crap for him. He and Cal kept digging until they found a bible thumping black coach willing to work with Easter Bunny, keep Tim Kelly, basically do anything they want, however they want it.
I'm honestly wondering if Cal and Jack think they're the smartest people in the NFL. To give the job to somebody nobody ever even though to interview for a HC job before. The idea that they see something nobody else can see. I think Cal's a moron. He's the Dunning-Kruger owner. The idiot who thinks he's smart. Bill O'Brien also thought he was the smartest guy in the room. He and Cal had more in common than they thought.
He was a very good coach in Tampa and he ran the defense as the Bears head coach. He has been a disaster since then but I give him credit for what he has done. His defenses are prepared, play hard and love him.
He lost his team and eventually the whole league. Nobody has wanted him for a while. Maybe he can rekindle that fire.
He has energy damn it! He is 65, we have to worry about him and Crennel dying of COVID... but Culley has PURE ENERGY
The defense itself is dated. Zone concepts in general get picked a part too easily. If he could be more innovative with similar cover 2 concepts, maybe with more pass rush and mix in some outside man coverage.
He was a disaster at Illinois. As the Bears head coach he did exceptionally well on the defensive side. He was working with the defense almost exclusively.... offense was a disaster because he had zero interest coaching that side. To this day his former players on the defensive side praise him.
