I was acutally hoping the Rockets would have drafted Courtney Alexander with the #9 pick. If Cuttino did not resign, then so be it. I like Alexanders game, along with 6-6 frame. If Cuttino did resign, then the #13th and CA arguably could be enough to get them in the top 7 (assuming CA could not beat out CM for the 2 guard spot) ------------------

I think what Greg meant was we actually traded #9 for #15 and this year's #23, so even after the trade we still could have picked MoPete at #21. So basically it comes down to MoPete vs. Collier, not MoPete vs. Collier and #23. I would still rather have MoPete, b/c 6'6 SFs can make it in the NBA (ask Shandon Anderson). ------------------
You seem to forget about 1998 too, when we got one of the top 5 players in the draft with the 41st pick. Again, no team picking 14th or later in that draft had a better draft than the Rockets. With the exception of Cuttino and Rashard Lewis, the '98 draft was a vast wasteland after we took Dickerson at #14. You want to see a waste of money, go look at 15-29 in that draft. Shandon Anderson is an SG, so no, don't ask him. He played SF for half a season for a non-playoff team, and struggled mightily. I certainly don't want another Shandon. And, apparently, you missed the point as well. The only way to measure your success is to that of your peers. It doesn't matter whether or not you think the Lakers are good, to make an example. They were better than everyone else, and they won the championship, the ultimate goal. It doesn't matter whether you think they could've done better or not-- they won the championship, and whether they're good or bad, you can't take that away. So how does that apply to this case? Well, you can only compare what the Rockets did to that of other teams. The argument I was making is that Collier and pick 22, or picks 18 and 23, was better than any other team's selection after pick 9 last year. Perhaps we could've done better taking Turkoglu-- that is the only exception in my opinion. But, I'm not losing any sleep over it. You win championships by doing better than your peers. The Rockets did better than any of their peers at pick 9 or later in last year's draft. You can plan "what if" scenarios for every year of this franchise, but if we do better than all of our peers, all of us should be happy. After all, that is the point of sports-- to try and be better than the rest. Last year, we were better than any team at pick 9 or later. I really don't think they drafted Mobley knowing that he had a steal. It was simply a lucky pick, just like Jeff Hornecek. It happens. ------------------
What? The Rockets do extensive research on all players before they draft them. You can never know, but they have good ideas as to what players can be gems in the NBA. They've done this for 30 years, and you are in no position to dismiss it as luck. Are you saying that Mobley was a pick that they already had in the of their mind, thinking "he's going to be a star. he's going to be a star. i know it" because you're not exactly in a position to dismiss it as that either. ------------------
Kid, I haven't ragged on you, so take this as a sincere disagreement. Cat was considered too small by most in the NBA. "A classic tweener" with a streaky shot is how he was described. Rudy and Carroll were ecstatic about getting him right after the draft. They couldn't believe he fell and was still available. At draft time that year, we had holes to fill. We needed a two, because Clyde retired, so they went with Dickerson. We needed a Point Guard, so they went with Drew, who seemed to have some pg skills and an outside shot. We needed a three, so they got Turkcan, who ended up being used to get a future pick, if memory serves. But that didn't happen until after we knew we had Pippen and therefore no need for him. (I am shaky on these details, but that is how I remember it.) Cat was signed to give us two kisses at the two guard, and it is a good thing they went that route. We were not looking to do anything at the 4/5 then. You have to judge the choices by comparison to what was available, what we needed, and what we took. Yeah, passing on Lewis was a big, big mistake, but the fear of high schoolers played into that. I admit that was a big disappointment. He's going to be a star? I didn't know all picks were considered for just that purpose. Mobley exceeded expectations, atleast for what I had for the pick, but in his own words at the time, he had a good workout in Houston: http://www.clutchcity.net/feature.cfm?FeatureID=60 This is a reach pick, but the Rockets liked what they saw in Cuttino Mobley out of Rhodes Island. Cuttino was nervous as the draft unfolded. "I was nervous, real nervous," Mobley said. "I said `If I don't get picked at 41, I'm done.'" But he was happy when it was all said and done. "I'm really happy right now," Mobley said. "I wanted to get picked.
