These surveys and arguments about cities are so ****ing stupid. Houston (or maybe it's just Rockets fans) like to **** on San Antonio for reasons that I don't fully comprehend. Oh and the Bayou City talking about another city's "dirty creek" is pretty funny. This guy gets it.
I get that it's the most "stressed" TX city. People been freaking out over the oil biz since Obama. Still optimistic of its ability to reinvent itself. Flooding is no bueno though.
Putting everything else aside, it's just not possible for Houston to be the worst place in Texas as long as El Paso exists.
Houston’s culture is taking everyone else’s culture and dumping it all in one place. You can certainly show an out of town guest a great time and the food is close to as good as it gets in the country.
How much has Innerloop Houston west changed? It was slightly unrecognizable 10 years ago (Montrose/Shepherd/Heights/Midtown areas), some for better, some for worse. How much has the eastside changed?
Pretty much the same. There has been a push in recent years to start tearing down dilapidated houses in or near the wards and building million dollar 3 or 4 story houses that take up the whole lot. Never understood why people would buy that when your car gets broken into at night. But I guess in time it will run off the hoodlums? East side, nothing exciting.. more storage tanks and plants. Houston is one of the largest ports and that will just keep growing. The refineries/storage tanks and etc. don’t make Houston attractive to tourists, and I’m good with that. Houston is on the leading edge of medical breakthroughs and technology. Hell even oil and gas technology. There are tons of very good paying jobs for people who may not have been able to go to an astute university. Trade jobs are well paying too. It doesn’t even compare to other cities, which is why people continue to flock here. It really is a good place to raise a family and be in that middle or upper middle class no matter what you do for work. Now the heat, humidity, and what seems like yearly “500 year” floods gets old. But at least you know a hurricane is coming, I’d rather know than have an F4 tornado barreling down on my house with a 2 min warning, or an earthquake wreck everything with no warning.
From what I was told, over the past few years there's a massive amount of foreign (investment, not resident) buyers in Austin, most are from Mexico, with a smattering from Asia and other places. Wonder where that money comes from?
I think Wallethub is also the joint that wrote an article claiming it was more expensive to live in Houston than NYC. Based mainly on money spent on gas to get anywhere. My NYC friend posted it. I couldn't help but point out that I could probably make any city the most expensive if I narrowed my focus down far enough, and that even adding in the tiniest quality of life factors into the equation would tip the scale heavily back in Houston's favor. I don't know if my eyes had ever rolled so hard. "having just been named the most-stressed city in Texas, a title it also earned last year" Yeah, as a Houstonian, I am stressed by the enormous numbers of people that have been moving to Houston over the past 10-15 years to get away from their failing cities and states.
