    Stubbs says hi

That money would've been better spent on a CF.

The money that could've made this possible just went to a .200 hitting catcher.

Yes, the guy with a career .506 OPS says hi....but when a guy who is below replacement level both defensively (as a catcher) and offensively says "hi", you ignore it.

Castro is significantly better than Stubbs in the field and at the plate. It was a solid and cheap improvement.

There is a reason Garneau got way more run behind the plate than Stubbs did last year

Ok, but you dont think young guys can improve?

Also as Nook said there are still better options than Jason freaking Castro at a cheaper price.

Yes, let's pay premium money for a catcher and then move him to a position where his production is nothing special. Brilliant plan. Perhaps we could also go get the best defensive player in baseball and put him at DH too.

It's not what I think, it's what his numbers indicate.

Castro is certainly a backup level player....Stubbs has yet to show that he's even anywhere near that good.

Can we hope that one day he becomes at least a replacement level backup catcher? Sure, we can hope, but as of right now there's no reason to think it'll actually happen anytime soon. Right now Stubbs is a minor league quality catcher, hell even last season he only had a .729 OPS in AAA....the last time Castro was in AAA he had a 1.303 OPS

Also, he's not exactly "young", he's about to turn 28.

Yea it is brilliant. His bat is top notch.
What part of that is bad?
He could have taught our younger guys some things..
But instead u have Castro and Maldonado.
    Good one

Jason Castro isn’t anything special, but for $7 million, the Astros have a serviceable tandem at the position with him and Maldonado. Both are above average defensively and good at handling a pitching staff.

It’s ok to have one or two defensive-minded players in your lineup.

His bat is top notch at Catcher. Not at first base, where you want to play him. You want to pay $25MM/yr for an slightly-above-average 1B. This is what the Twins did with Joe Mauer and it worked out exactly as expected: terribly.

Yuli Gurriel is a similar bat at 1B than Realmuto for a fraction of the cost.

I just want the season to start already. I want to watch a non-embarrassing Houston team that I can be proud of.

    RIP Don Sutton

Astros probably in the world series in 1981 if Sutton doesnt get hurt. What a nasty pitching staff.

Then you must think Realmuto is pooo as well.

    Yuli career numbers
    .287 AVG, .324 OBP, .792 OPS, 111 OPS +

    Realmuto career numbers
    .278 AVG, .328 OBP, .783 OPS, 111 OPS +

Yea... paying Realmuto 22 million a year to play 1B in 3 years would be fantastic. We get the same production from Yuli for 6.5 million.

Your 3 year fantasy of having Realmuto on the Astros officially came to an end when Castro was signed. It's okay if you need to cry a little.

Yuli struggled last season as he was trying to play through some type of wrist or hand injury during most of September and the entire postseason.

In 2019, he most certainly was not poo at the plate. He had an .884 OPS, a .298 AVG, 31 HR, 104 RBIs.

I'm guessing both of you guys are looking the other way on Yuli age.

Idk if its just me but that scares me.

Doesn't scare me on a one year deal with a team option for a 2nd year. The list of free agent 1B is also very weak.

    Matt Adams (32)
    Asdrubal Cabrera (35)
    C.J. Cron (31)
    Derek Dietrich (31)
    Todd Frazier (35)
    Marwin Gonzalez (32)
    Tommy La Stella (32)
    Jake Lamb (30)
    Mitch Moreland (35)
    Logan Morrison (33)
    Daniel Murphy (36)
    Renato Nunez (27)
    Rangel Ravelo (29)
    Pablo Sandoval (34)
    Danny Santana (30)
    Ryan Zimmerman (36)

And it was mentioned before Alvarez got hurt that they may want to look at him at 1B in the near future...
