Glad he gets his money and that he'll get more time on the east coast near home. He paid his dues and earned every cent. Will always be one of my favorites no matter where he plays. Hopefully he'll stick it to NY and Boston a bunch for the next several years.
If Toronto is ready to give up Derek Fisher for nothing I would be ok with Houston bringing him back. Id rather have Fisher/Straw in CF than overpay Jackie Bradley or bring in an empty bat like Kevin Pillar.
He just got paid like one of the 10 best WAR producers in baseball, and I don't think he's one of the 10 best WAR producers baseball. In his entire career, he's been a STAR 1.5 years (2017/2020), he's been a SUPER STAR one year (2019), and other than that...he's been an excellent, but not super star level player. Maybe he'll end up being worth the contract, but $25 million a year should be buying MVP level play.
Springer is awesome, will always be a ****ing Astro. So many fun memories. Best of luck, and I'll enjoy watching the Jays outside of the games against the Stros. Ozuno who? Ozuna where?
I really wish the Astros would have done something to keep him. He's worth the money. He's probably the best playoff performer the Astros have ever had. It's too bad a lot of that money is tied up in a pitcher that isn't even able to pitch.
These kinds of incentives always make me laugh. $50k for World Series MVP? Really? If he wins the WS MVP, it means you won the World Series. Is that really not worth more than a $50k bonus? Also, I wonder if the Astros are one of the 8 teams he picked no trade to.
I had the same reaction. Especially relative to his overall compensation. If he wins the MVP , it's the equivalent of a $600 bonus to a guy making $100k. Sure, it's better than nothing, but it's a little bit incongruous. I'm curious what the largest award based bonus structures are. If you're Mike Trout, would you be willing to drop your base salary by $2 million if you got a $5 million bonus for a top-3 MVP finish? The most creative one I think I've seen is Eric Gordon - his 4th year is guaranteed with an all star appearance, or a Rockets championship.
I'm happy for Springer. We all knew it wasn't possible to keep the entire core together. I got to watch Springer play in Round Rock multiple times and knew he'd be a star. Toronto is getting a great player and person. He'll certainly be missed.
