After Mr. Wallace was shot to death as he chased two Philadelphia Police Officers with a knife, the Philadelphia Police Commissioner was asked why the Officers did not use a Taser on Wallace. His reply? Recent Defunding had eliminated the funds to provide Tasers to all Officers patrolling the streets of Philadelphia....

So,...now that Minneapolis is trying to hire third party police to overcome shortages and defunding the police is NOT looking like the suburbs AOC alluded to and meanwhile progressives and democrats are blaming each other for position losses related to defund the police ...Moderates such as Rep. Abigail Spanberger, D-Va., Rep. Marc Veasy, D-Texas, and Rep. Vicente Gonzalez, D-Texas, joined a chorus of others who complained about calls by colleagues to defund law enforcement.

Democrats did not pick up a single state legislative chamber, and their majority in the U.S. House of Representatives has narrowed, sparking calls for a change in leadership.
"We lost races we shouldn’t have lost," Spanberger exclaimed during a call last week with the House Democratic Caucus. "'Defund the police' almost cost me my race because of an attack ad. Don’t say socialism ever again. We need to get back to basics.” https://www.foxnews.com/politics/tl...ssives-hurt-them-in-election-i-cant-be-silent

Naturally, the progressives that view compromise and moderate views as blasphemy are fully against the dissenting viewpoints. Progressives are tired of taking the backseat while biding their time and biting the tongue however at the core of all of this is whether or not defunding the police saves lives. It can be argued it doesn’t and in more ways than one

Another dopey Roxran troll thread. The "compromise and moderate views" of the last four years of a Trump Presidency are lost on him.

Lots of herp and derp about BLM, Defund, and Socialism, but the other side of this coin is that these same mainline and bluedog Dems who got washed out largely leaned away from things like minimum wage increases, drug legalization, universal healthcare, and other populist positions. The culture warrior left is a burden, but these dummies aren't exactly helping themselves out either.

It was poorly named, it should have been called - move some social services to social workers.

or Demilitarize the police by removing their access to retired military equipment.

Agreed, but its name shows the frustration that all attempts at reform have largely failed. See the following book which I read and it in detail from an academic point of view shows how all the numerous attempts have to date been near total failures.

The End of Policing is a 2017 book by the American sociologist Alex S. Vitale. The author argues for the eventual abolition of the police, to be replaced variously by decriminalization or with non-law enforcement approaches, depending on the crime. Wikipedia

    Oh god.

What are we going to do with the usual suspects who inevitably slink back in here and complain about whatever the democrat - controlled govt attempts to do, while ignoring (and by example asking us all to ignore) that they literally cheered for the destruction of most political and democratic norms? That they overlooked and excused and cheered for the base criminality, the chaos of the last four years?

The split in the democratic party over how to frame and how to pursue police reform is a legit topic, and an interesting one to discuss.

Also, inevitably Biden will make stupid gaffes, and the dems are going to do some things wrong this year, and deserve criticism for it when it happens.

But to discuss it with folks who looked the other way, cajoled, false-equivalenced, both-sided, and outright cheered for an utterly criminal administration with zero respect for the constitution or the rule of law, or even basic facts or truth... It's like stepping in a big steaming, stinking jacuzzi of bad faith. Gross.

    Exactly.
Roxy is just trying to troll and I hope we can refrain from giving him the attention he desperately wants.

The problem is we haven't had enough police shootings. They are rare events and if you don't have high profile incidents like George Floyd in your news people eventually go back to favorable feelings about law enforcement

    Agreed.

Many people doesn't realize that the police used to be first aid and ambulance transport (along with funeral homes) for medical emergencies. The officers weren't trained for medical emergencies and many people would unnecessarily die enroute to the hospital. It wasn't until the the mid 60s when a professional ambulance service would start in Pittsburgh with mostly black staff who were actually trained in medical care . They served black neighborhoods that had substandard service due to tension between the black community and police. Soon the use of medically trained ambulance service took off everywhere else because the quality of care is significantly higher. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freedom_House_Ambulance_Service

I see 'defunding the police' just another step in that direction. Let the trained professionals do what they're trained to do. Absolutely no one would argue for the the police to take back their responsibility of being ambulance service. I see separating police duty from social service duty to be better for everyone.

Meanwhile violence has spiked during the pandemic. The only group of people as a group who have a beef with police are blacks.

Don't want to argue about reasons. Just saying people like law enforcement and only in moments of caught on film brutality is when this movement can gain traction
