"My phone was ringing off the hook"

What else might iGen (and future gens) drop from the language

I find it funny that the universal "save" symbol in tech is a depiction of a 3.5" floppy disc (something that hasn't been relevant in the industry in 25 years)

Isn't that the thing about good idioms though? They stay in the language despite the actual reference no longer being relevant?

There's a bunch of idioms that I would love to leave this board.

    Idioms... Idiots... What's the difference?

yep, or you could say many idioms weren't even idioms to begin with, like @DonnyMost's tech example ... ie they were originally 100% literal, and later became *lasting* figurative speech.

...like coaches saying "The film room" / "studying film" the moment all coaches stop saying that (if they ever do) would be an example of a literal thing, becoming figure of speech, and then later dropping from the language.

    metacrawler, the google before google.

As far as idioms, "let me xerox a few paper copies for that document"

"Roll up the window." Modern car windows don't use a crank, electric powered.

"Pulling out all the stops" - originated from when organists would literally pull the stops from every pipe on an organ in order to play at maximum volume.

Not really an idiom but when EVs take over the car market and there are no more gas engines, it'll be the end of loud car sayings. Hearing an engine roar when you press on the "gas" pedal.

    "Hang up the phone"
    "rewind the video/song"
"save it to your hard drive" (basically non-existent now)
"when does their next record drop" (or album)
"We have a bad connection" (sure, we have virtual connections but they used to be physical wires with a switchboard operator literally connecting you)

    Bonus:
"ride shotgun" (from when the driver needed a buddy next to them packing heat to protect them from those injuns)
