Correct me if I'm wrong, but if we trade Watson, doesn't he still count against our cap? His dead money for next year would be $51.2 million.

There's no way the Texans are going to trade away someone of Watson's caliber AND take a cap hit like that.

I think if we traded him, we'd take like a $26mil cap hit from it.

That's close. Not sure if it's right on, because it's based purely off memory, but it's in the ballpark. May be $21mil for instance...

How about a big thumbs up for JJ Watt -- handling a bleak Texans' outlook with professionalism and class...a consummate TEAM player. Young players who are outspoken on social media can learn a lot from him.

After JJ posted a cryptic message on twitter about leaving the team....

I don't disagree with you, but let's leave the double standards and politics out of this.

I mean at this point I think it’s the owner or the qb...and I know we’d all still take the qb

but if things are irreconcilable like reported, I guess he’s gone

I still hope that protest at nrg at least let’s cal and easterby know how much they suck and gets them thinking

There’s a twitter poll where you select Watson or Easterby.

5% have selected Easterby. There will always be that one person here who roots for the owner and wants the players to “shut up and dribble”... and that’s before considering the racial connotations in that.

Watson shouldn’t have absolute control over Texans decision making or even any kind of final say. But that isn’t what he’s asking for. The problem in culture and decision making from the top is so wildly obvious that I don’t understand the argument the few are making that Watson should just shut up and play. When you’re a great player and you see **** is being done the wrong way, it’s ok to use some of that power and do something about it. I’m not sure if cryptic Twitter posts and the silent treatment is the most productive means, but that’s a different topic.

We all know how hot the Deshaun Watson Texans story is. There is now a growing consensus in the league that Watson will force his way out of Houston and would command a high compensation package. Watson has a no-trade clause in his contract. Yes, sources confirm, the Dolphins remain a preferred destination because Brian Flores has built a culture there he likes. Oh yeah, and Florida no state taxes just like Texas.

    Schefter:

There are people who believe Watson will never play another down for the Texans. We’ll see whether that holds up or not. There are a number of people within the Texans organization who are unhappy with the events of the offseason — players, business members. One person connected to the organization said the Texans have the least desirable coaching job in the NFL. That’s a fact. That’s how that job is now looked at by everyone.

They reached out to Eric Bieniemy. He has not decided whether to interview with the Texans. The chances of him finally landing a head coaching job look pretty bleak.

The bright side, is that a lot of Watson fans will have a new team to pretend to support and will hopefully move on from here.

    https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2021/01/17/deshaun-watson-has-not-yet-asked-for-a-trade/

The Texans invited Watson to give input for both the G.M. hire and the head-coaching hire. He did, and the team disregarded his input. The Texans initially ignored his recommendation that Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy be interviewed for the head-coaching job. As reported last night, the Texans completely ignored Watson’s recommendation that former 49ers defensive coordinator (and now Jets head coach) Robert Saleh be interviewed for the job.

To those who point out that quarterbacks aren’t supposed to play that kind of a role in the management of a team, two points: (1) the Texans asked him to play that role; and (2) since quarterbacks are expected to be quasi-members of management, why shouldn’t they play that kind of a role in the management of a team?

Consider the specific dynamics in Houston. Texans owner Cal McNair and executive V.P. of football operations Jack Easterby made the decision to hire Nick Caserio to serve as the next G.M. How are McNair and Easterby more qualified than Watson to make that call?

McNair and Easterby have made three past General Manager decisions, none of which went well. First, they tried (and failed) to hire Caserio. Second, they decided to proceed without a G.M. Third, they decided to make former head coach Bill O’Brien the G.M., a decision that was undone after only four games in 2020.

As a result of those decisions, the Texans didn’t get enough for Jadeveon Clowney (and paid too much of his 2019 salary), the Texans gave up too much for Laremy Tunsil, and the Texans were snookered by the Cardinals for receiver DeAndre Hopkins.

So what can the Texans do at this point to avoid getting an official trade request from Watson? The only thing to do is to make the best head-coaching hire that they can, and to hope that the new coach can figure out how to get Watson to stop short of asking to be traded.

Caserio and the New HC have to convince Deshaun that McNair and Easterby are not making any more football decisions going forward. Calsterby has to agree and be held to their word. Now that they have a HM and HC, there are finally adults in charge of the football side and Deshaun doesn't have to worry about Calsterby's meddling.

If Deshaun likes the HC and can be convinced of that, there's a chance.

Even though Calsterby has been completely incompetent in the GM/HC search, things could still work out. Caserio has a good reputation and could be a good pick. The Texans could end up with Eberflus, Daboll, Bieniemy, Brady, or Staley. Any of whom could be a really good HC. They could accidentally end up with really good people in place despite completely ****ing up the process.

If this is true you can be assured that Casserio will get a king’s ransom. Something like our two picks back, Miami’s first and second this year plus Tua and Miami’s first and second next year. We could either gamble on Tua and draft our qb next year with the inevitable top 3 pick this year or best QB available at 3 if you don’t like next year’s class.

Those three picks from the Jets wouldn’t be enough. That’s ridiculous...
