If Trump does pardon these people it might be the push needed for conviction in the Senate. As noted the Founders specifically cited abuse of pardon power as grounds for impeachment and whether Trump pardons the Capitol invaders or not the trial in the Senate will happen.

True but impeachment and the trial in the Senate has always been more political than legal. Given that the invaders literally were on the floor of the Senate Trump pardoning might push enough reluctant Senators to convict. Also I'm not so sure about Trump selling pardons and would be interested in seeing a link on this but he clearly has used pardons to reward people like Roger Stone from cooperating with investigations into him.

I read the story from Malakas and the NYT about Trump insiders offering to sell pardons. If pardons can be tied directly to a financial gain from Trump or his insiders I would say that is more time to test if the Article 2 section 2 pardon power can be used under impeachment. Also that should be grounds for criminal charges even after Trump is out of office.
