How is Tilman Fertitta ownership different than Les Alexander ownership?

"Shut Up and Listen" and everything it suggests. Say what you want about Les but he would never have given that advice as to how to succeed, because he knows it's bad advice. Shut Up and Listen is Tilman's philosophy regarding success. So it's not for nothing that he forced the Westbrook trade, then bragged about having overruled his front office.

How's Les different? How isn't he?

Fertitta is the bigger liar. The bigger ego by far.

Alexander stated that the Rockets were a hobby, an expensive one.

I think Alexander didn't even have close to the funds of a Fertitta.

Lmao, he did dismantle a Top 2 team in 2018 within 2-3 years or he let it happen.

You're an open person to not see that.

Morey did play a part in that too.

Let's face it. Tilman can only cut costs, he knows nothing, he can't hold superstars even if he wanted.

Him being a Trump supporter also does not sit well with a lot of players.

At least Alexander was more transparent at things he wanted like making the playoffs every year or playing up tempo most of the time.

Lol. Even if Les was a worse owner than Tilman, Tilman is still a cheap azz blowing up the team by running everybody out of the town. The real question is how the Rocket’s ownership stack up against other ownerships in the league.

I gave my reasons as to why I think that.

People should not be surprised that he put in his own guys. Practically every owner does the same thing when they acquire a team or buy a company. People knew then Morey wasn't going to hang around for long, I'm surprised he hung around as long as he did, same for MDA. Not at all surprising that he couldn't wait to run them off, they weren't his guys.

As for the Ariza stuff, I do think people need to get over that. Ariza has been washed since that season, completely. Luc too. CP3 followed that year by playing so badly that it would be easy to dig up the threads about how terrible a contract he was.

Tilman just wasn't as into Morey/MDA era as some people here and it's really time to move on.

    I give you a reason.

Mark Cuban is also, what you would call, an unconventional owner.

He is passionate, he parties with players, it is well documented. He shows empathy, he regularly calls up players and asks them what they need.

He is a big brother and a 'teammate', not the prototypical 'owner'.

The thing about Ferntits is, he isn't even acting like an owner too in the worst way.

He meddles, he is constantly being untruthful, he is loud, he is making a traditional powerhouse a family business, he pretends to know about basketball which he clearly doesn't, he is unwilling to spend big bucks.

He really treats players, personnel like robots and even as slaves sometimes.

'I want to win a championship' without ever knowing how to get there, the most unknowing fanatic could say that. It's really just corny.

He is not qualified as an owner to me. Plus he is a douche as a boss. The question isn't if he is bad or good, he isn't qualified IMO.

Other than being a billionaire which is minimum requirement these days.

(Morey and MDA not being his guys) So his guys are his family lol I detest that. These are professionals and not the Family matters bunch or Brady bunch on TV).

He's got to learn how to work with professionals who are not his family or friends.......ridiculous.

Maybe Tilman thought he'd be a Mark Cuban transformative owner. But he's only been heavy handed out the gate, not refined in basketball culture enough.

Les seemed satisfied with a good product on the floor. As long as it didnt lose too bad, and he didnt have to overspend for it. He was maybe more broad picture about value of franchise later on (the China dealings of course).

That is one of the few points that is fair.

Yeah, most owners want to start from scratch.

That is why half of the owners own mediocre teams.

You got to have the blue print, a good spirit to work with NBA professionals, an upright and honest character, being fair counts.

All those qualities (and the know how and expertise) would really help.

    Luck with the draft.

Les has two 'ships with the Rockets and four championships with the Comets.
He seems to know when it's time get out (selling both team).
Had strong business ties with China.

I only observed Cuban and the Holt group.

Cuban's has had some up and downs but overall brought a championship to the D-Town.

The Spurs are a good franchise, a relatively small market, professionally run.

Obviously the Celtics, Lakers, Warriors, Heat, (Bulls bc of Jordan) and Clippers are the most covered franchises, their ownership is well known.

(Tsai the Taiwanese American, Alibaba group dude, Chinese government is limiting the company, but on sports level, he cracked the jackpot with the Big 3)

The Tilman Fertitta ownership will never win an NBA title. That'll be the only difference that matters.

I'm trying to image Tillman partying with Harden, going to strip clubs, sippin Hennessy and droppin honey buns...Harden turns to Tillman and says, you gotta slap that Thicc booty'

Don't know, did Les have his picture twice on the same mural? I think other than he is hard to listen to him.just not having the money some owners have is the issue. Honestly, unknowingly to him, he picked the worst time to buy the rockets. Not only does covid effect the nbs income but his industry is hit one of the hardest.

IDK if it's a trend but more and more teams are quietly owned by investment groups, not just one guy.

    The difference is RESPECT.

The owners of the league don't respect Tilman (they see him as a riverboat gambler that just got enough millions with his casinos and his McDonalds (I know Papas) franchises that they would never eat at.) Like they did Les.

Silver works for the owners the refs work for Silver. If there's no pressure from ownership then there's no Respect or fair calls or anything going to change until we have a billionaire owner that demands respect.

Great OP, Lars. I essentially agree with everything you wrote and admire the effort you made. I also think you should have copied and pasted it here instead of just posting the link. You still can and you should, in my opinion. Just leave out anything mentioning RealGm. ;-)

    Kudos.

Les may have been just as cheap but nobody but us knew about it. All of Tilman's dirty laundry is public and he's not just a crappy owner but a crappy human being in general. Laying off 20% of your workforce then buying a superyacht is bad optics. Being on national TV giving yourself a bj is bad optics. Dedicating the front office page to your own ego is bad optics. People who personally know this guy have good reason to hate him and this will be relevant in free agency in ways that were never relevant for Les.

A very beneficial move from Alexander was funding the RGV Vipers as a lab for the front office, players, coaches, and system. It may be emblematic of paying for infrastructure.

Fertita on the other hand is known for low cost businesses. It may be too soon to judge but right now it doesn’t be look like he can fund similar infrastructure improvements.

These are squeezing times for Tilman; if/when he recovers, he may pay for something worthwhile yet. Maybe 2-3 years post pandemic restrictions would be a good time to make a final judgement on him
