Breaking 1-06-21: MAGA terrorist attack on Capitol

The quacks mean it when they say they want civil war. This is very serious, and people need to start paying attention to this insurrection movement because it's nationwide.

 

...no, I'm not saying not to prosecute at all.

...I don't know exactly what you do with 10s of thousands of people in a "protest" or a "demonstration" that devolves into this...especially if one of the defensive arguments is going to be that there are differences between "federal trespassing" and "unlawful entry into a federal building" or something like that, for instance...

• where do you legally stipulate that the trespassing began? Out in the street? On the lawn? Onto the facade or the plaza? Marking off a designated area or perimeter for "protesting" or "demonstrating" either did not happen or wasn't conveyed to anybody who was supposed to be "leading" the "protest"
  (side note: it takes a TON of paperwork and authorizations and permits to organize any kind of formal demonstration on capital grounds. Nobody just shows up there in a large group and claims to be "protesting" and within their rights to be there, that's why people get arrested right away that do that)...
• who is/was supposed to be responsible for organizing/informing these "protestors" of the rules they were supposed to follow? Anybody there who went into the capitol building isn't going to be able to say "the president told me to do it" and use it as a defense against any prosecution...even if the Donald was the de facto "leader" of the "protest" (and it's safe to say that he could be seen that way - which goes back to laws and procedures not being followed or obeyed from the beginning - and maybe this you can hang around the Donald's neck, or at least try)

...I'm no legal beagle or anything close...but that **** comes up there without even trying...and who knows how much more is going to have to be sorted out (when was it scheduled? - how many people could be expected? - how much time would be needed to be blocked off? - what kind of facilities needed to be provided or accommodated for?)...

...I'm like you on the outside looking at all this. I'd love nothing more than a Hand-of-God resolution to all of this:
...just take one big swipe and brush all of them into the nearest dumpster.

And set it on fire.

But that's not the way it's going to work. Nor should it be, honestly.

The truth of the matter is that this is one humongous clusterf@ck of legal proportions. Even for the obvious parts of it. We are definitely in uncharted (if not totally unfamiliar, national history-wise) territory with this ****.

The thing to remember though, is that very few people there are going to walk away from this scot free. That's going to be a legal definition, how many of them are actual "insurrectionists" or not.

But in perpetuity (and in the minds of everybody who looks back on this)...they're going to look like those old photographs of public lynchings.
There may be many who didn't do the actual lynching. But they were damn sure in the picture. And nobody's going to bother making a distinction, either.

Maybe not everybody there is going to jail, @Sweet Lou 4 2.

But this is going to be chained to every one of them there for the rest of their lives...so nobody's going free...

 

Trump will lose a lot of people on the fence with the result of last week and he will lose some because he admitted he lost the election and said he will start a smooth transition, I really think a lot of his followers are gonna be turned of that he capitulated.

Trump does not have magical powers just look at how they turned on Reagan, all things have a shelf life.

Yes he will probably turn on these guys but some folks will love them and fox has to prop somebody else up to cater to their audience.

 

You make great points, I could be totally wrong and now he just has nothing to lose.

I am probably looking at him through this current lens and not looking at him through how he campaigned.

 

I think you prosecute the RING leaders harshly, you slap those that trespassed on the wrist with misdemeanors and a promise that the next infraction is a full fledged felony.

And you get as many as you can.

The fact that Muslims or African American and Leftists are mistreated when protesting is no reason for mistreating the misled Trump supporters.

It is a very difficult situation to sort out.

Maybe a 100k folks demonstrating or listening to Trump, 25,000 walking down to the Capitol, 15,000 crossing thought the gates, 8,000 or 2,000? rampaging through broken down doors. Many of those who did not enter encouraging those who did. Some innocent or dumb i.e Trumpsters or protesters, some seditionists, some killing police, some intending to harm or kidnap Congress Persons. some stealing congressional laptops and records with all that could signify.

In America you do not want to completely discourage all demonstrations for instance by finding all guilty as accomplices (like the getaway driver in a robbery) if some AHOLES unexpectedly kill someone.

Agreed. Mitt is one of the only Republicans who has come out looking good. I disagree a lot with his economics which is not much different from the corporate dems who have also been complicit in the road to much more inequality which sooner or later leads to stuff like fascism or the Trumpsters storming the Capitol.

 

We were lucky. It was sheer luck that kept this from being a blood bath. Have you seen the lone black officer who backed up the staircase and as he retreated led the mob away from an open door to the room where the mob would have been met with gunfire, including one officer with a semi-automatic rife?
