Movies that I love love love: 1. The Good, The Bad and The Ugly 2. Rocky 3. Conan the Barbarian 4. Bloodsport 5. Forrest Gump 6. The Outlaw Josey Wales 7. High Plains Drifter 8. For a Few Dollars More 9. Fistful of Dollars 10. Kill Bill Vol. 1 11. Fight Club Each one of these is absolutely brilliant. Well, maybe not Bloodsport.... it's fun to watch, though!
One word - Kubrick Strangely, I don't care for Dr. Strangelove at all - the only Kubrick movie I feel that way. Crap, in seeing fade's list I failed to mention "Forrest Gump" and "Bloodsport" ("You broke my record!")
LOTR trilogy The Matrix God Father I Scarface JFK Blade II Forrest Gump Monty Python and the Holy Grail E.T Dance of Wolves P.S. I'm surprised that no one have mention The Passion of the Christ yet.
life of brian monty python and the holy grail the meaning of life.. me and a few friends once sat down and watched ALL of the flying circus episodes in a row brilliant!
That's odd. I'm a huge Kubrick fan, and EWS left me entirely cold. Now Kubrick goes for cold, true, but he usually has more sensitivity behind it or at least a sense of satire. Eyes just seemed voyeuristic, sexually and emtionally, and unlike his other films, the characters themselves seemed cold as well. Additionally, Cruise is not a seemless enough actor to pull off the Everyman as a metaphor for the viewer role Kubrick demanded of him. Actors past and present who could pull that off; Stewart, Hanks, Duval, Peck et al usually fall into the underrated category: they act without you being aware of it. Cruise, while a lot better than before, and capable of nice performances in the right role never lets you forget he's acting. Strangelove is an interesting mix, I'll grant you: Kubrick's remote cool combined with non-stop satire and over the top characters; Clockwork and elements of Shining have this, bot usually more of an acute sense rather than altogether as in DR...But I think that's what he was shooting for; the idea of accepted madness, and the beuracracy which sustains it because it's status quo. EIther way, it really works for me. P.S. I saw a lot of Hitch in your list. Hitch is my fave, (with Kubrick, Lean, Wider and Allen) and if you like him check out some of the better Frenc directors, such as Renoir. Many directors have done homages as well, and Agoyan's and in particular Polanski's are probably the best english efforts.

I kept on falling asleep through this one too. It had all those great reviews and makes me highly suspicious of trusting just official reviewers. Off the top of my head: Action: Aliens 2 Terminator 2 Comedy: The Princess Bride Galaxy Quest - if you are a Star Trek fan Bowfinger Clerks Drama: Fight Club Chasing Amy Open Your Eyes ( spanish version ) Sci-Fi/Horror: John Carpenter's: The Thing Crime: Goodfellas Some people may think of the Kevin Smith films as having a small appeal, but some folks listed a lot of cult movies...
I think you nailed the analysis of Strangelove dead on. I think its probably his greatest departure from the rest of his films and that is why I can understand why Manny didn’t care for it. I also just watched Renoir's Rules of the Game last weekend and loved it so much that I added it to my current top 10. I am eagerly awaiting seeing The Grand Illusion.
What's with The Shawshank Redemption? It's on a bazillion lists, here and elsewhere, but it wasn't my cup of tea. Maybe I'll see it yet again one of these days on cable and finally "get it". Manny, I love all of Kubrick's films, including Eyes Wide Shut. And I think it's one of Cruise's best performances. Kidman was really good too, although I hated her character. Great flick.
The Shawshank Redemption was pretty good, but it was really just a simple remake of Escape From Alcatraz.
This thread makes me cry. Not one mention (at least that I saw) for the funniest movie ever made. The Dude would be ashamed. The Nihilists have already won when nobody lists The Big Lebowski as one of their favorite movies...
