This movie looks so damn good I'd be surprised if noone's already posted something about it...but I will anyway. You can dowload the trailer from here: http://www.movie-list.com/h/hero.shtml There's a new trailer for it before Kill Bill vol. 2, but I couldn't find it online yet. It looks like it may be similar to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, except MUCH grander in scale. The cinematography looks INCREDIBLE! And to top it all off, it stars Zhang Ziyi.
Kind of ironic that people here in America are wowed by movies like "crouching tiger, hidden dragon" and "hero"....yet there are plenty of chinese movies that are 10x better that will never make it to the US market.
yeah... it's been out for a while in China. you could probably get the DVD on ebay or Amazon if you don't want to wait. and plenty of people, myself included, have posted on this topic. it was better than crouching tiger hidden dragon. on a different plane i would even say. even though i am a huge fan of chow yun fat. i do think zhang ziyi is vastly vastly overrated. plenty of better actresses in china that get less pub.
what? what chinese movie is better than hero? that was one of the best ever. the problem with hero is the problem with Yao. too much hype, and now even all the chinese people are criticizing it.
i liked it, but it is long and pretty slow. dunno if american audiences will get it, but i dont think the chinese audiences got it either. visually stunning, pretty, but not what people would expect.
Yeah, I think this is a movie I'd rather see for the first time in a theatre. I think it's american release is in august.
Can you name some others we'd be interested in? I'd like to know what the others are, so I can look for them.
This movie really isn't very good. The pacing and editing is pretty bad, and it only has two fight scenes that are actually interesting (fight on the lake, and the two assasins taking on the entire army).
1. I don't think you understand what irony is 2. No, there aren't. There are better Hong Kong, Japanese, and even Koren films, but China doesn't excatly crank out noteworthy cinema.
The longest 96 minutes of your life. Like I said beforem the pacing is really bad and the way the film is edited makes it feel even longer. Don't get your hopes up.
I am much on Martial Arts type action movies but i really enjoyed this one. Its pretty similar to style to Crouching Tiger but different enough to distinguish the two. The cinamatography was excellent and story was pretty solid.
Crouching Tiger was a great movie but sadly Hero is not as good even though the scenes with the emperor are quite good the general feel you will get is that it is too slow and the story is not interesting enough sadly. It had the potential to be great
this is pretty old, saw it nearly a year ago. cinematography is breathtaking....i loved the scenes in the sakura forrest. my favorite tree, and they weaved them with vibrant colors, it dreamy.
Actually, the movie isn't anything like CTHD. Actually, it's not like ANY martial arts film I've ever seen. The director, like Ang Lee, isn't known for directing movies of this genre, which is why some martial arts movie fans find it bad. Personally, I think the movie plays out more like an art film. The pacing is slow, as others have said. The story can feel strange, and I'm not sure just how much people here can understand. Seems to be a "either you hate it or you love it" type of a plot. However, I must say the fighting cheorography looks MUCH BETTER than Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon.
okay. i have a bit of time now so i will qualify my previous remarks about the movie. the pacing was meant to emulate the genre of the chinese kung-fu epic. i mean if you're not into it then maybe you won't appreciate it. the passage of time was one of the most breathtaking aspects of the movie for me, it draws you into the wonderful cinematography and syncs you to it. as for "getting it." well, most westerners are not going to get it. that why CTHD was huge, the storyline was westernized, the whole movie was westernized. that's why I didn't like it as much. meanwhile, Hero, is authentic. because the conception of the Hero in ancient Chinese lore does not fit into the archetypes of the greco-roman or judeo-christian Hero. the protagonist (Jet Li), submits to the will of the mandate of heaven. it is counter to the western beliefs of self-determination and control of ones own destiny. anyway... i liked the movie. but maybe there's a reason why CTHD was so much more popular. i bet if you asked Quentin Tarrantino which is the better movie, he wouldn't even think twice.
