What happened Wednesday wasnt' justified and should be criticized unequivocally. At the same time what happened between May 25th to June 4 should be criticized. Continue talk of normative and and positive claim just muddies it up because from what I'm hearing from is also essentially a normative claim. That the Capitol shouldn't have been invaded but these people are angry that the election was stolen. You don't agree with that and neither do I but they're adopting the same rationalization.

This is better for it's own thread and I thing there are threads about this. As it happens I had this conversation with another friend of mine who was asking what is driving the grievance behind the people who stormed the Capitol last night.

From talking to Trump supporters many of who fit the demographic of the man shown in Nancy Pelosi offices they actually do believe that their way of life of is under attack from a society that doesn't look like or function like the society that they grew up in. Many of these people grew up in places that were predominately rural or on the edge of suburbs where nearly all of the population was white, Christian and followed a very narrow set of morals. Since then many of the places now have growing Hispanic populations and in Minnesota even Somali populations. At the same time many of these communities over the last 30 years have been hurt as small scale and family farms have been wiped out, jobs like coal mining have been lost, while the mortgage crisis and opiod crisis have taken a toll on the local economy. Many of these people while they are seeing more people who don't look and sound like them moving in to their communities have also seen the overall rural population decline as many of their children have moved to cities. This is why they chant things like "We will not be replaced!.

There are certainly valid problems happening in rural America and there are many reasons behind these problems but what happened but as so often has happened in history it's easier to blame groups like "illegal immigrants" and refugees, along with the forces of moral relativism. Essentially this is an economic struggle that has become a war culture and nativism. For people like Trump and others that is fertile ground and is the same playbook that demagogues since Alcibiades of Athens have capitalized to gain power.

Well, most of these bozos thought that...since their taxpayer money paid for all this...they had a right to be there and weren't trespassing. But, if they go on a destruction rampage in the offices, then they are for sure guilty of something.

 

Rural people have grievences. But their grievences are equally shared by all middle class and poor Americans.

However the median white household wealth is 1000% greater than the median wealth of a black family. Their grievences are far more legitimate and far more worthy of armed insurrection.
