Obviously that would never happen, but it does make me curious to who the last politician nominated to the Supreme Court was (if ever). We've seen Senators names being thrown around before, but I don't know if or when it has last been done.

I know ****** Taft served as chief justice.

He did not get stuck in his bathtub because they took xxxl precautions.

Interesting that I knew the bathtub factoid, but not about the supreme court. Clearly we focus on the most important parts of history in school.

William Howard Taft is the only former president to have been nominated, confirmed and then to have served on the Supreme Court. Numerous former Senators and Representatives later became Justices of the Supreme Court, primarily during the 19th century and the earlier part of the 20th. There have been 14 U.S. Supreme Court justices with prior service in the Senate, one with subsequent Senate service, as well as 17 U.S. Supreme Court justices with prior service in the House.

So there is a precedent were President Obama to become a Justice of the Supreme Court. I would welcome his appointment to that august body. I'm not at all sure that he would, however.

I see that a couple of our "august members" beat me to it.

Forget about Obama, he is not going to serve. Name some realistic candidates.

Taft was heavily approved by the Senate, with only 4 nos (3 coming from his own party). That just wouldn't happen today. Of course you could still force it through as Republicans proved 3 times over.

They should invite three or four other folks to dinner. I doubt Biden has the balls or the desire to pack i.e balance the Court.

How could I forget him? He is missed by millions. You might notice that in my post I was skeptical that he would take the honor were it offered. I'll add that it is an honor, even if that honor has been cheapened by trump and McConnell.

The Chief Justice before Taft was a US Senator
The Chief Justice after Taft was Governor of New York and US Secretary of State and GOP Nominee for President
The 3rd Chief Justice after Taft was a US Representative and US Secretary of Treasury
There were three other US Senators on the Court at this time (Sherman Minton, Harold Burton and James Byrnes) Byrnes resigned early to join Roosevelts Economic team, then become Sec of State at close of WWII and SC Governor
The 4th Chief after Taft was Governor of California
and that takes us to 1969

looks like politicians ending in Nixon era

Even better, and highly unlikely to want it. I wouldn't blame her a bit.
