My wife left a burner going on the stove and left the house.

Worst case scenario, terrible burns to our kids or us or even death. Less worse case scenario, house catches on fire, possibly burns down.

My OCD notwithstanding, this is a pretty big sin in our house, we're very safety oriented. We're super careful even with candles.

People make mistakes but at the same time negative reinforcement in this sort of scenario has a lasting impact.

I told her she was grounded. Not sure if I'll keep my stance on it (I can't really enforce it). Last time I screwed up I was in the doghouse for a while. I know she's contrite but as I said, some negative connotations besides our kid's faces melting might be good for long term determent.

    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

For those of you who don't think this is a big deal, the number one cause of house fires is unattended cooking.

You should turn it back on, bring her back to the scene of the offense, and rub her nose in it.

That said, I left a toaster oven on for a whole weekend and came back to very burnt bread crumbs and was RELEIVED that my house didnt burn down. Its scary to run the possible scenarios that couldve played out in your head. Im sure she feels guilty enough knowing the fact that she jeopardized the lives of her whole family.

I'd do this but also pee on the flame for added dominance.

Yeah. I sent her some pictures from the Shriner's Burn hospital. It's probably enough.

I might take it 'more seriously' because I used to walk by the Shriners Burn hospital 3x a day for years when I lived in Galveston and would see these poor kids that were burned horribly firsthand. I was in tears several times. It's terrible. I would rather die than any child in the world be burned like that.

Peeing on her, would be my choice and further assert dominance.

Might have an opposite reinforcement effect.

Possible. But you shall remain Alpha for the foreseeable future, unless you have a weak stream.

But the burning pee smell reinforces how bad it is to leave the stove on. You'll get some splash back on her anyway.

I don't think I could ever 'ground' my wife. She is a rational adult that understands right from wrong. We are partners and I wouldn't want her to punish me for something that I screwed up on either. Punishment is a training tool for kids and dogs that don't know any better.

Since your wife is already showing remorse and this is the first time, I would not push it any further if it were me.

If it's something that's that really bothers you or something that she does often, then I'd look for alternative solutions. An induction cooktop would be much safer and would practically eliminate possibilities of burning down the house. Some expensive models even have wifi to turn off the stove remotely.

I had the habit of leaving the house door unlocked when I am at home. I don't remember to lock it behind me when I come inside the house and she hates it. Rather than having it being a point of contention, I got a smart lock that automatically locks after 3 minutes if I don't remember to do it myself. Problem solve

You cannot ground your wife, that's illegal.

Unfasten the toilet seat and then leave it down sitting on the bowl... repeatedly.

If it happens again, and she says it didn't, that you are just imagining things,,,,then she is gaslighting you.

Maybe she saw the movie during the pandemic, as the word started trending.

She’s very sincerely contrite so I’m dropping it.

Thread was more about the idea of holding your SO accountable.
