As I’ve spent waaay too much time running trade scenarios, this is pretty much the conclusion I’ve come to. I actually think this will end up being a 4 team deal. The 3 team scenarios leave Houston with insufficient assets or eating salary that they shouldn’t when Harden is going out.
If we trade Harden for Jaylen Brown and picks, I think we'd have the ability to get Porter Jr with picks. If Denver was willing. Depends on how much you want to keep the picks.
He has the most upside of any possibly obtainable player. The gulf between Porter’s upside and Jaylen Brown’s is large. Porter is an athletic 7 footer than moves well enough to play the 3 and strong enough to operate inside with 5’s. He is possibly the best young shooter in the NBA and he has quick feet so he can score inside and even off the dribble. He has a lot of the same characteristics that Kevin Durant has, with the possible upside to be a genuine franchise player. He is easier to build around than Harden or even LeBron James because he doesn’t require the ball in his hands as he thrives off ball and in the flow of the offense.
Imagine you're the 3rd or 4th team not getting Harden. What's their motivation, make Celtics better, make Nets unstoppable?
I'd love it, but I don't think it's going to happen. I think it's more likely we get MPJ, a solid starter, and picks OR Brown and picks.
Technically, they could sum 40M without giving Brown (Smart+Tristan+young guys+mins). Hard part would be finding that "Porter Jr" and dealing for him with only those assets + picks. Is a pessimistic scenario, but could be real.
Maybe, he had a micro discectomy at 19. He has about a 1/10 chance of the surgery failing. Everything comes with risk, but Porter has the upside of being a top 10 player in the league and that is what is needed to win.
Jaylen and Jayson are so good culture wise and their names go hand in hand with each other. What a shame to break that up.
