It's pretty obvious that Morey is leaking info to national media of late regarding Harden. When I look back to when Morey "resigned", why the hell did Tilman buyout Morey's contract WITHOUT A NO-COMPETE clause? We all know Morey took only a week or so to get the Sixers job, which I assume he was probably offered well before the "resignation". In the past, teams were able to get draft picks by allowing their GM to move to another team. We got nothing and are paying Morey to be a pain in our ass. Horrible business. I bet you Tilman makes bartenders at his restaurants sign no-compete clauses, but forgot to do so with the guy who ran everything with his 2 billion dollar investment.
Because Morey is expensive and Tilman was probably jumping for joy to get out having to pay that. Although I agree with your premise.
Didnt read but yup hes dumb as ****. Went all in on a business he already cant afford to pay for just 3 years in
This. Also if Tilman were able to negotiate picks for Morey's services. Morey wouldn't have much to offer Rockets after landing on Sixers for getting Harden. lol Morey really hates Tilman, he stiffed us big time.
I think there's something in sports leagues where non-competes must be prohibited. Executives jump from one team to another all the time, and they interview for positions even more frequently. The team that currently has the executive I believe must give their permission for the move to happen, except in the circumstance that the job the employee is interviewing for is a clear promotion or step up in pay/responsibilities. I have no experience with CBA's, but I feel like this is an accepted fact in the sports administration world. In this context, Tilman's mistake was taking Morey's excuse at face value and not seeing through his desire to jump to the Sixers. Although you could consider GM to president of basketball operations as a step-up, a more savvy owner would have negotiated the release on better terms. It's happened in the past where one team had to give up some sort of compensation in a "trade" of sorts for the coveted executive. At the very least, Tilman should have alerted the NBA league office when he found out that Morey was going to Philly after only 1wk off his old job. If any evidence for tampering can be brought forth--and it's clear Philly had been tampering with Morey for a long time before he quit--then Houston might have some legal basis for demanding some kind of compensation, any kind, for the Morey-to-Philadelphia transaction.
A couple considerations: When dealing in the millions, non-compete clauses are a bit more difficult to navigate. Why would DM ever agree to a non-compete? I dont think the league would approve in the first place. The league can't afford to have high caliber NBA personnel sitting out for a couple years because of BS policies. Sorry Silas, we can't hire you. You have a non-compete clause. This BS is usually left for people dumb enough to sign one and/or those who can't afford legal council to fight it.
It's not often where they directly move that way. You will always see guys get promoted and switch teams like that without getting picks or whatever. However, in this case where a top 3 GM is being poached (possibly illegally) and you actually buy him out, a 1 yr non-compete clause is the sane thing to do. Morey wasn't a FA. Tilman pissed away money to buy out Morey and is allowing Morey to manipulate us with the Harden situation. Tilman failed to have the team's best interest in mind. All he thought about was saving a few bucks. The reality is that he could have MADE MONEY if he found suitors for Morey.
Because he was under contract and doesn't have the leverage (or shouldn't) to GET PAID to go to another team where he'll f__ us a few months later.
He doesnt have to trade Harden so if you think Morey is doing that, its fine. It may not help him get Harden no matter how much Harden whines. As the days go by Harden looks more foolish not the Rockets. Everyone can see the Rockets are deep and can contend with Harden and Harden looks foolish for partying.
Non - competes need to have compensation attached or they are unenforceable. I will bet that Morey said forget the guaranteed contract, just let me retire, an Tillman jumped at saving 8m a year. DD
How can they be non compete clauses? If someone is hired by another team he is immediately competing against the Rockets. So you want them to sign a contract that makes them unable to be employed and find another job in the NBA? There are sure to be confidentiality clauses for example not having fired coaches and GMs going straight to the press and spilling the beans about what happened behind the scenes. Or writing books about it. I think George Karl had to remove things from his book because of that. Also I don't think that a GM was traded to another team for a pick. Coaches have , GMs I don't remember.
