We've discussed it before, but people will go to extreme lengths to defend their ego. Trump was the consummate con man. He said all the right things that appealed to people's visceral responses. Look at any strong man or dictator and the pattern is the same, we're victims, we're superior, we deserve more. And once the ego has gone all in, it would be a crushing self-defeat to admit that you were fooled. Especially at this kind of scale, with the reinforcement of right-wing television, social media and political leadership.

I watched Rick Steve's ' Fascism In Europe' recently, and it's a dead ringer for the Trump cult. Mussolini more than Hitler but he was the original.

Detroit Wants to Sanction Sidney Powell for 'Kraken' Lawsuit | Law & Crime (lawandcrime.com)

The City of Detroit wants Sidney Powell and her self-styled “Kraken” team to face sanctions for “frivolously undermining ‘People’s faith in the democratic process and their trust in our government.'”

The Motor City’s motion asks a federal judge to fine the lawyers, ban them from practicing in the Eastern District in Michigan and refer them to the Wolverine State’s bar for grievance proceedings.

“It’s time for this nonsense to end,” Detroit’s lawyer David Fink told Law&Crime in a phone interview.

“The lawyers filing these frivolous cases that undermine democracy must pay a price,” Fink added.

Under standard procedures for Rule 11 sanctions, opposing counsel must be granted a 21-day window to withdraw offending litigation before a request is filed in court. The motion has not yet been filed, and it was briefly tweeted out by Marc Elias, an attorney from the Washington-based firm Perkins Coie who has regularly intervened in these cases on behalf of the Democratic Party and the Biden campaign.

“Plaintiffs and their counsel understood that the mere filing of a suit (no matter how frivolous) could, without any evidence, raise doubts in the minds of millions of Americans about the legitimacy of the 2020 presidential election,” Fink’s 9-page motion states. “As this Court noted, ‘Plaintiffs ask th[e] Court to ignore the orderly statutory scheme established to challenge elections and to ignore the will of millions of voters.'”

There's like no downsides starting up a doomsday cult.

SDA and Jehovas Witnesses started with the belief that the world would end with Jesus's return in the mid 1800s (different dates/prophets). Now they more or less legit in polite society...

Heck, the people in them are likely more decent than average despite knowing their own history.

It's easy for secular types and rationalists to pin this on religious or wishful thinking. I think it's more a human attribute of tribalist protectionism.

Better off being a sucker and not lose anything than a conquered rube who didn't know how he was hit.

Agree, self-preservation instincts push us to align with perceived strength even if we may not agree ideologically.
I assume this is what happened to the GOP. Support the Chief or get out of the tribe, when there is no safe place to go. We saw right before our very eyes that his rise to power was accretive. The same people who called him a threat when he was weaker, started climbing on when the train got rolling.

It's harder to see but maybe we start seeing our self-preservation in Climate Science, Health Science, infrastructure improvements, and strong coalitions with other democratic nations.

    eh, probably not, ha

Good post and spot on. Trump supporters have internalized their support to where it is now part of their identity. They can't give up or admit that Trump lost as it would mean that they have lost and are themselves losers. This is exactly what a con man or cult leader will do. They will make you believe that their battles are your battles and their enemies are their enemies.

Looks like Powell is going to face more legal actions against her wild false claims.

    https://www.nytimes.com/2020/12/17/...-false-allegations-about-voting-machines.html

Dominion Voting Systems sent a blistering letter on Wednesday night to the right-wing lawyer Sidney Powell, demanding that she publicly retract her “wild, knowingly baseless and false accusations” about the company’s voting machines, which have repeatedly found themselves at the heart of conspiracy theories surrounding the election.

The letter, a preparatory step to formal legal action, accused Ms. Powell of engaging in “reckless disinformation” about Dominion’s machines at news conferences, rallies in support of President Trump and on conservative media outlets like Fox News, Newsmax and Rush Limbaugh’s radio show.

    ...

Dominion noted that Ms. Powell never mentioned her accusations in any of her court filings, depriving the company of the opportunity to legally refute them.

Detroit is the only city that has the balls and taking appropriate action. Black voters there know what it’s like to be disenfranchised (city history). They are 100% correct.

if only some of the predominant white cities would follow suite
