God, the postseason can't come soon enough. The second Ed Dodds walks in for an interview, you lock that door.
It's really not *that* dire. They won 21 games the two years prior. I'm not suggesting this team is still that good (they are not) - but the idea of a much-improved coaching staff/front office - alone - dragging this team to 9-10 wins isn't unfathomable. And they'll be able to create cap space and/or recoup some draft capital through trades. And while not having your 1 and 2 is sub-optimal - they do still have 8 draft picks next year so they will be able to add talent and/or package some of those picks and turn them into premium picks. And players are going to want to play with Watson. That's going to matter. If they hire an NFL assistant, you'll have players who want to play for their (former) coach, too. LaFleur took over a flailing Packers team and immediately resurrected them because he built an offense around the one asset you have to have to win. The coaching hire is big. It can maximize Watson and potentially turn some players around that guys like BOB/Devlin/ROC couldn't.
Rosters can look a lot better with the right coaching and leadership. I'd point to Miami as an example - in September 2019, they were dumping talent for future picks and everyone thought they would go 0-16 hoping to get Tua and start a long rebuild process. They got to pretty decent by end of last year, still managed to fluke into Tua, and were really good this year before switching to Tua. What changed? Turns out they weren't as un-talented as people thought, the coaching staff was really good, and they got the best out of their players - without even relying on those future draft picks yet. They gave up the most points in the NFL last year and currently have given up the least this year. Going from bad to good is doable without massive changes.
A Riddick/ Bienemy or a Riddick/ Saleh hire combo would have me feeling pretty optimistic about turning this organization around fairly quickly
Thanks. Now I'll have to pay attention when hes speaking now. Nothing against him. I just never really look at their names so much.
Over Dorsey yes. He has a good track record but sounds like he has some BoB in him. The McNairs have built an environment where infighting and backstabbing have thrived. Texans have a lot to clean up on and off the field, I’m not sure Dorsey is the guy to do that.
My choice would be Dorsey, Riddick, then Dodd. My bias opinion would be Riddick, Dorsey then Dodd. Would love the first black GM/HC/QB combo.
I am very much all about this. There are other great candidates too (Dorsey, etc...) that would be cool, I just hope there's no head-scratching WTF Texans? moment....again.
