    The French Laundry got more than $2.4M in PPP funding; 17x more than average Bay Area restaurants

    NAPA, Calif. (KGO) -- The luxury restaurant where Governor Gavin Newsom and San Francisco Mayor London Breed were notoriously spotted dining during a COVID-19 surge, reportedly received millions in PPP funding.

    Yountville's highly acclaimed French Laundry received multiple loans through the Paycheck Protection Program, totaling more than $2.4 million, according to an ABC7 analysis of newly-released data from the Small Business Administration.

    The French Laundry received two loans that were both approved on April 30, 2020. According to the SBA, the first loan was for more than $2.2 million to retain 163 employees. The second loan was for $194,656 to retain five employees.

    RELATED: Companies founded by Newsom collectively get nearly $3 million in PPP loans, data shows

    ABC7's analysis found the company received 17 times more than what the average Bay Area restaurant received.

    "I'm angry, but what can I do about it?" said Dennis Berkowitz, former owner of San Mateo restaurant Vault 164.

    Berkowitz struggled to get around $318,000 to retain roughly 50 employees. The loan amount wasn't enough to sustain his business, and he was forced to sell the restaurant in July.

    "I've had a 40-year run in the restaurant business, so I consider myself fortunate," he said. "I really feel bad for the next generation of restaurateurs because they're screwed."

    The PPP loans payouts seemed to go to a lot of questionable places, other than small businesses.

    How about government funding to Mega Churches & untaxed religious groups? Separation of Church and State? Hmmm

    Lakewood Church got 4.4 million
    Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston 4 million, and the Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese got another 4.5 million.

    More than 1,000 religious groups in Texas received hundreds of millions of dollars.

    Obviously fraud is bad.

    But any service industry is affected by shutdowns the most.

    Whomever figured out that the loans to restaurants is probably not an accounting major but some art history dropout

    the loan you give should be scalable on the type of restaurant you have.
    the small business should get enough to cover his employees and expenses, which is not what's happening there or in other places

    Why do you keep posting so much content about California on a Texas-based basketball BBS?

    more people on clutchfans know or care what the French Laundry is than actual Californians. Had never even heard of it before seeing it here.

    I thought he was the owner but turns out it’s just a fancy place the CA governor once dined inside during the pandemic, I guess.
    This is scandalous.

    Thomas Keller is a world renown chef with restaurants all over the place

    I know that the majority of people on the D&D just watch CNN all day and have no cultural appreciation of anything else besides yelling at other people.
    but that's not my fault.

    When I mention Tupac only @pgabriel knows who i'm talking about.

    @Os Trigonum
    @basso

    I wouldn't be surprised if 70% of the D&D is @SamFisher 's duplicate accounts
    and @Carl Herrera being a joke bot that didn't get enough funding

    then you got ALOT OF TROLLS FROM CHINA HERE ON THE D&D
    who else calls America
    'The US Society'??

    Not democrats or republicans, but the CCP

    Wow. French Laundry is one of only 14 Michelin 3-star (highest rating) restaurants in the US, and we are comparing their costs to Vault 164, a $15-$25 a plate family restaurant?

    the chefs, sommelier, and wine storage/insurance costs alone at French Laundry are probably more than Vault 164’s entire loan.
