It's strange that we can be on opposite ends of the political spectrum (well I am not a "leftist" but I might as well be in this political environment from the perspective of a conservative).

I think a popular vote for president has to go out the window. I also think that presidential powers has to be limited a great deal. States having more power makes sense the issue is that there are too many states and there is a need for some kind of consistency.

Any lawyer who seriously thought this could succeed shouldn't be trusted as a good attorney.

We don't have a popular vote for president already and the Constitution already gives a lot of power to states and limits the power of the Federal government. The USSC just reaffirmed the sovereignty of the states by rejecting this case.

why do you care so much about austin? you said in another thread that you have only been here once and you also complained about how liberal austin is now and how it should go back to how it used to be. you actually said "i didnt realize how leftist austin is". and considering that austin used to be way more liberal than it is now i think its clear that you know nothing about austin. personally, i doubt you have ever even been to texas.

youre so butthurt that trump lost that you now want to break up the country...why dont you move to russia and let people who still believe in america and democracy live in peace?

for the last four years all we constantly heard from trump cult members was that we were just upset that hillary lost. we were against trump because we couldnt stand that hillary lost...now look at you fools! youre so upset that trump lost that you not only refuse to accept the results, but you want to break up the country. yall are anti-american traitors. sad.

You have a lot of trust for our system. I see it has failing. Trump has exposed its weaknesses. While some can argue it stood up to a demagogue, I'd say it was all way too easy for him to challenge that system and have support of many he should not have.

Our system of gov't isn't working. It hasn't worked for the last 25 years. The federal gov't is moving too slowly on too many fronts. We need a better system not one build for colonies of low population 250 years ago before the advent of electricity, cars, and wmds.

Yes it is easy to challenge but it hard to win. Like calling "next game' at Fonde.

Trump's grifting and lawyers are getting paid, nothing has gotten close. BFD take the rubes money.

Win two seats in Georgia and eliminate the filibuster and we will get stuff done.

...when we've talked about or mentioned "norms" in our (federal) government...

...we've generally taken that to mean that the functioning and well-being of the country was better served by actual governance, and not by posturing or political theatrics.

Our system has largely relied on the willingness of legislators to work towards common goals...which should have been about the citizenry and not about self-interest.

What the Donald has "exposed" and "threatened" is the idea that we all care enough about the one tether in this country that binds us all - the rule of law - that we would set aside personal affectation for common good.

And we wouldn't need an inordinate amount of legal declarations in order to do that.

That "honorable" method of governance may no longer be possible.

...which means that we may have to codify some of that "honor"...in law as well as in practice...in order to move forward.

Seating those 100 or so Republican congressman who agreed to have millions of voters' voices discarded (some of whom had even been voted for by those same voices)...is an example of honorable governance...

Whether or not they should have been seated, after carrying out such a blatantly seditious act, is what must be answered for...

...if we continue to say that the right to lie or believe anything you want is equal to objective and indiscriminate evidentiary discovery...and there is no marker or deterrent for interjecting such nonsense as this into our political discourse...

...things are only going to get worse.

...I'd have thought we've gotten over this whole "separate but equal" business a long time ago...;)

Trump has exposed serious flaws but he is finding out that our system of government is far more resilient than many of us think.

It’s very troubling what Trump has done and so many slavishly support him. That said he still lost and continues to lose. Saying we should split the country or have two systems of government isn’t going to solve things or make people happy. We tried that and it was a failure.

We never tried what I put forward - so I am not sure what you are referring to. My last post particularly with 7 regional gov't and one president with a lot less power I think could really work for this country.

Trump and Trumpism isn't over. He will be back in 4 years and a high chance to win given that the Senate will block everything to ensure Biden doesn't do well and to try to keep the country in turmoil. Republicans will not be rooting for recession. And if Trump wins again, he will be more powerful with more allies and tools to subvert democracy.

I wouldn't take solace that Trump failed in his coup. It's not over yet - not by any stretch of imagination. 4 Years ago, I warned that Trump would attack democracy itself. And until he is dead, he is still very much a threat.

How would fiscal policy work? Who pays for shared military? While the idea of leaving conservatives to wallow in their cesspool of ideal society is great, all outcomes of such a split would always lead to either war, or some massive subsidy to ensure stability (which is a more inefficient setup now).

Having the dollar as a fiat currency and world's reserve is the key part of the current United States strength.
