    1) Jeff Bagwell, 1994
Key stat: Bagwell became only the fourth player in history with a slugging percentage of at least .750. The other three -- Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and Rogers Hornsby -- had all done it roughly seven decades earlier.

    2) Lance Berkman, 2001
Key stat: He was the first switch-hitter in MLB history with at least 50 doubles and 30 homers.

    3) Jose Altuve, 2017
Key stat: His .420 average over a span of 60 games (May 27-Aug. 8) tied for the highest by any player on record in a 75-day span (since 1904).

    4) Craig Biggio, 1997
Key stat: His 146 runs scored were the most in a season in NL history since Chuck Klein's 152 for the 1932 Phillies.

    5) Lance Berkman, 2006
Key stat: His 136 RBIs that season remain a club record.

Assuming post season accolades and being on a better team don't count, Biggio.

No love for Bregman in 2019?

It is Bagwell unless you want to knock it for being a shortened season. He had impressive totals for a 162 game season, but with 50 fewer games. His slash line was simply unbelievable.

Bagwell had a 1.200 OPS ... in the Astrodome. Outside of the strike (and broken hand), its one of the greatest seasons in MLB history, let alone Astros history.

Bagwell's value per game was the best, but he shouldn't get credit for games he didn't play. Getting hurt was bad luck.

He wasn't trying to extrapolate his stats to a full 162 games, if that's what you meant by giving him credit for games he didn't play. He was saying his stats would've been impressive enough if he played a full 162 seasons; 39 HRs, 109 R, and 116 RBI are impressive full season numbers.

While impressive, Bagwell had several seasons with better homers, runs, and RBIs than 1994. 1994 was impressive in total stats, but more so due to the pace he was on.

I think Jeff Bagwell's 1994 Adjusted OPS+ (where they take into account ballpark, pitching, era, etc.) makes it the second best season ever in the history of MLB...or something. I feel like I remember that being an article during his HOF campaign.

It's interesting that soo many vote Bagwell. When Altuve led the Astros to a World Series win. When we argue about who is better in all the other sports it's always about championships.

Baseball is the ultimate "large numbers" statistics sports. Individual accomplishments in baseball tend to mean more than in other sports for that reason. Mike Trout is the hands down best player on the planet and MVP, but his team is terrible.

The 97' Biggio season and the 19' Bregman seasons are under rated.

As for Bagwell in 1994, over the course of 162 games it would have been the third best season in MLB history.

I would probably give it to 19 Bregman. He was better in basically every regard to 2017 Altuve.

Won't get any love because the numbers look so pedestrian by today's standards, but Dickie Thon's 83 season deserves some love. It was almost impossible to generate real power numbers in the dome back then.

    94 Bagwell wasn't a full season.

I voted Altuve for a few reasons. May not be the most glamorous of all the seasons statistically speaking, but my god that man was unstoppable that year. Never seen anything like it. And it propelled us to the WS...cmon, what else could you ask for? Baggy was *really* close (and is my favorite Astro ever), but we were in 2nd place behind the Reds in ‘94 and obviously the season was cut short. Completely different story if ‘94 season plays out, but 2017 Altuve takes the cake for me.

Looks like Brian McTaggart got it right.
