I happened to mention to one of our licensing guys that I need to know Clinton Portis' new number on the Redskins for a future card set. (Currently, he's listed as #0 on their web site.) This guy is good friends with Portis and his agent, so he should be able to give me the answer I need. So, later in the afternoon, the licensing guy comes around my cubicle with a grin on his face. Apparently, Ifeanyi Ohalete, the starting safety on the team, has the number 26 and is unwilling to give it up to Portis. Heck, even Chad Morton tried and failed to get the number last year. So, what does Portis do? He challenges Ohalete to a boxing match for the right to #26. As of yet, Ohalete hasn't taken him up on the offer, but Portis is pushing hard, trying to bait him. (FYI: Portis likes to box.) Portis - 5'11", 205 lbs. Ohalete - 6'2", 222 lbs. Man, I'd pay to watch that fight on Pay-Per-View. More details as I get them...
Ohalete had the number first. He should be allowed to keep it. Toss Clinton a box of tissues and tell him to pick another.
Well, he wore #3 at their recent scrimmage/camp, but he claims that number will NOT be his when the season starts. I have a feeling Portis will have to get used to life without #26.
