I received an e-mail yesterday stating that as of June 15, my monthly Netflix fee would increase to $21.99 (up from $19.99) However, no one else I know who subscribes to Netflix received such notification. I was wondering if any Netflix subscribers here on the BBS got this e-mail. I'm just wondering whether they increased my fee b/c of the insane amount of rentals I go through per month... If so, I plan to cancel immediately and go with Blockbuster. However, if it truly is an across the board price hike (though this doesn't explain why my friends didn't get this e-mail)... I will reconsider severing ties with the service provider. Thanks.
Your free 2-week Netflix membership will begin when you click Start Membership. Simply cancel anytime in your first 2 weeks, and your credit card will not be charged. If you are enjoying Netflix, do nothing, and your membership will automatically continue with a flat monthly fee of $19.95* plus tax, for as long as you choose to remain a member. No commitments, no hassles. Cancel anytime. *Please note: our Standard Program Rate will increase to $21.99 effective on June 15, 2004. Looks like it's across the board
I got that notification. There was an interview on CNN someone from Netflix describing the increase. The problem is Netflix makes money when people rent 3 point something movies a month and they lose money when people go over so they want to increase the cost so that 3 point something means Netflix still makes a profit.
I did as well. I keep Netflix in business. I'm their ideal customer. The three movies I have right now are the same three I had a month ago.
OK. Good to know. I actually did look up the information on their web site, but I didn't see that asterisk with the price hike information. Ah well. I'm still considering going with Blockbuster. It costs $29.99 a month, but at least I don't have to wait for movies to show up in the mail. DoD... is there a Netflix forum somewhere? I was actually looking for one, but found nothing official (except a Yahoo! forum)
I think netflix is great and because they have a distributor in Houston, I get my DVDs pretty fast (around a day or two). I usually get my movies on weekdays but I don't watch until the weekend, so waiting is really not a problem. Currently I have Beverly Hills Cop II & III and Fargo out.
Remember that movies are edited for content for Blockbuster (the original owners are right wing Puritans). It's actually in the contract for directors for the big studios that they have to make different versions. That's important to some people and not so important for others.
whoa whoa whoa!!!! I absolutely had no knowledge about this!!! Is Hollywood Video the same way? Damn. I'm gonna have to do some research on Blockbuster before shutting down my Netflix service. Major thanks for the heads up Woofer. I owe you.
It's only Blockbuster unless they bought Hollywood Video. There was more coverage a few years ago, but the web has a short memory. Blockbuster hates sex, loves violence, just like Jack Valente and other right wing idealogues. Spoilers below for Require for A Dream and Y Tu Mamá También. In the second case, it changes some of the meaning of the ending. http://www.epinions.com/content_61917073028 http://www.citypages.com/databank/24/1159/article11070.asp
There are frequent discussions about netflix at AVSForum and HomeTheaterForum There are discussions about the rate increase and various alternative services. Just do a search. As for switching to blockbuster, you would be able to rent more movies per month that way, but it could get annoying driving to the store to exchange the DVD's. Also if you are used to netflix you will find that blockbusters selection sucks in comparison. This is especially true if you like to rent less mainstreem, older or foreign movies.
Thats odd. I bough a used copy of the unrated version of Y Tu Mamá También at by local blockbuster. As far as i can tell nothing is missing.
From the second link: "Blockbuster spokesperson Liz Green "...we will not carry anything above a R rating, such as NC-17. With unrated films [like Y Tu Mamá], we make decisions based on our customers' expectations." To the company's credit, Blockbuster carries both the R-rated and unrated versions of Y Tu También in many of its stores. Green explains that Blockbuster anticipated customer demand for the film's unrated version given the popularity of its theatrical run. But if customer tastes in certain areas were deemed otherwise, the stores in those areas were required to carry only the R-rated version." Apparently your local Blockbuster carried both the R- and unrated versions. From the first link: "REQUIEM FOR A DREAM is available in two versions. The one you can find at Blockbuster video is the edited version, which cuts out a few of the more sexually graphic scenes (including a doozy with Jennifer Connelly)."
Yeah right. One of my former co-workers keeps them in business. The 3 movies she had last week were the same movies she had last July. (No, I'm not joking).
So you get to keep them as long as you want? What is the deal? 3 movies at one time, for as long as you want? I don't watch enough movies to ever consider spending 20 bucks a month on rentals....
Here's the new pricing for all the plans: On June 15, 2004, our prices will change to: Standard - 3 movies out a time for $21.99 Plus - 5 movies out a time for $33.99 Ultimate - 8 movies out at a time for $49.99 Economy - 2 movies out at a time (limit: 4 rentals per month) for $14.99 You have to consider whether having to wait a few days for your movies is acceptable or if you enjoy the actual browsing in a video store and immediacy more.
