From the Chron... Saturday's auction brought in more than $230,000. Final totals will not be available until either today or Monday. Alexander and the NBA/WNBA are contributing $150,000 in matching funds to whatever was generated by the auction. That's approximately $380,000 from the Rockets, $100,000 from the Astros/MLB, $100,000 from Bob McNair and the Texans, $100,000 from Bud Adams, $100,000 from the NFL and $250,000 from George Foreman. Add to that whatever the charity basketball game Sam Cassell and Nick Van Exel made and you've got about a million bucks raised by Houston sports teams for flood victims. One reason sports are important to our community. ------------------ Things do not change; we change. - Henry David Thoreau
....More.... The money raised from MLB was the first situation donation ever. Also I believe the Grocer gave 100k matched by MLB. Great to hear about giving back to the community. ------------------ "Chucky who? I thought we were talking about basketball?" Charles Barkley
Not to b**** again -- I am happy the sports teams / owners / leagues are participating, BUT, throw out the $230k from the auction because that's money from fans / auction attendees, exclude Foreman for a minute and you've got, from The Rockets, Astros, Texans, Oilers, MLB, NFL, and NBA, a whopping total of what, $500k or $600k? I mean it's better than nothing but let's not make out like these guys are freaking saints or anything. That's about 1/4 of what the Grocer is paying Kent Fattenfield this year, and about one 84th of Kelvin Cave-O's deal. Not to mention Bob and the Grocer are both billionaires. Not to mention that all the press they get for these donations is probably worth the donation amount anyway. rant over, carry on ------------------
People are never happy. 100,000 yea isn't a whole lot to them.. But lots of people in Houston aren't even giving 10 bucks. They try to help and then they are talked about for only giving 100,000 or whatever.. As far as the auction. Les could have made money auctioning that stuff at games etc and kept it for himself. He did not have to offer to have it auctioned for the flood. does it really matter how much press they get.... the money is still helping people just the same..
