I think most people know I’m a registered Republican, decided to flip for sleepy Joe last minute for purely ethical reasons. one thing that is deeply disturbing is the affirmation of what I believed to be true in 16’. The modern day Republican Party and trumpism is a cocktail of whit/anti-color or immigrant agenda. I don’t think I’ve ever seen such an abject failure with how we handled covid. 3rd world countries have done better. Everybody is affected...but these folks feel so strongly about the white agenda that they’re putting their health at risk. a friend of mine called me desperately for info in april, her mom was on life support and was as close to death from covid as can be, dad hospitalized. Both voted for trump and thought this was a hoax. She told me recently they voted for Trump again. Joe can win, but the fact that these many people are so blinded by hatred/race wars is a big eye opener.
I can see that in rural areas. Big cities have a slightly different equation. Asians are still split. Some hate the threat of China. Others are worried about racist rhetoric and harassment by Trumpets. They’re mostly fluid if racism isn’t in play. People who like tax checks are on the boat. We’ve seen Latino voters vote out of social conservative values or even a nativist flair against “illegals”...how Americanized is that! Populists think the government can print out unlimited money. Trumpism is on that gravy train. Ride it until it busts.
Yeah, I have family that were near death because they also felt Covid19 was a hoax. One of them is still at only about 40% lung capacity but still voted for Trump and haven't changed their 'news' intake sources. I'm flabbergasted.
In 25 years, Non-White Americans as a group, will be the majority. White America’s fear is that they will be treated as many minorities have been in American history, specifically Blacks in America. They are voting with FEAR.
Not really. That would only be the case if every one of the different current minorities bound together. That will take some more time. Hopefully soon.
I don’t think the influence of right wing media can be emphasized enough. The message being broadcast is that Liberals are inherently evil and out to get them, which allows the right to justify any action they take (no matter how immoral or criminal). And the sense of exclusivity in which the right wing media frames it’s messages (I.e “we’re the only ones telling you the truth.”) becomes like an addiction. The mainstream media may lean left on most issues (though not nearly to the extent claimed), but it does not issue the same kind of rabid propaganda found on right wing media sites. Combine that with the fact that many people (especially so called moderates and even moderate liberals) are still convinced by Reaganism’s screeds against good government and fair taxation, and there is just way too many people who will never vote anything but Republican. It has nothing to do with policies and everything to do with tribalism. The best thing we can do is try to listen and then gently walk them into admitting their false assumptions. I have an old HS friend who is very conservative, but respects my political knowledge. So when we talk, I just share facts that I know will resonate with him. I doubt it changed his vote this time, but I’m hoping I’ll lead him to the light eventually.
people got fooled by Obama getting elected twice 8 years of that, and white America was ready and willing to go all in on someone like Trump...or at least white, non-college graduated America

What would it take to change Fox programming from so much propaganda? Someone at the very top deciding to make a little less money, have less of an addictive agenda, a tad more balance... for the health of a nation? The short-term money-motivated pull will always be there -- it looks lucrative as hell to vilify half the country, to amplify fear and division -- so I'm not hopeful.
Honestly, the most likely scenario (once Rupert is gone) is that the right wing crazies move to networks like OAN or the long rumored Trump News Network, cutting seriously enough into Fox’s viewership that they pivot more towards moderate politics/talking heads. Ironically, the quality of their data science team of this election may indicate that this is the path forward. Regardless, the bigger problem is penetrating both the media and social bubbles surrounding conservatives and exposing them to real liberals and progressive ideas (vs bogeymen and straw men). Psychology indicates that the best cure for extreme beliefs is having those beliefs countered by individuals who are perceived as being decent and of the same “tribe.” But while that’s conceivable on the micro level, it seems quite daunting at a macro/nationwide level.
Good points but I think the bigger issue is similar to Facebook and say online games there is now a great deal of knowledge being applied to what addicts people and in this case triggers them. Read an article recently discussing the differences between liberal and conservative people. Let’s face it you can name abortion, gun rights, healthcare, etc and people consistently fall into one side or the other for most of the issues. Studies had shown that Cons were more driven by fear in their reactions and having less emotional intelligence. Thus if you want to addict a Con audience into watching your program 24/7 then find out what makes them fearful and shove it in their face. Home invasions by minorities, socialism, weekend shootings in Chicago numbers, illegals killing Americans, etc. etc. And pump up the conspiracy theories of course. It’s all happening because someone doesn’t want you to know the big secret! The genie is out of the bottle that this “news” is crack! And it gets eyeballs and retweets and makes money so stopping it? I don’t see how.
That's a tough one to pin down. Millennials treated the burbs differently and tried to live in cities. In Austin, at least, it caused gentrification in urban areas that caused minorities to move to towns like Pflugerville. I mean "old burbs" were deeply provincial or "exclusive". My sister lives near Round Rock and tried sending my niece to a charter school. The families there were waspy-af and openly spoke out worries that Asians would out compete or overtax their little preciouses. Even the kids were slightly racist. Demographics change, so I don't know what'll happen at the burbs...
I don't know how a white person who is in a largely white crowd of a Trump rally cannot see something is wrong when it's almost all white people. Is it even SLIGHTLY ODD? Does it trigger any feelings at all? Or do they believe that's how it should be?
5% increase in Trump votes by hispanic and black males. it was these evil "white americans" who voted in biden. not to mention the number of those killed by blmers is 100fold that of "white supremacists". life is easier when you congregate in sheltered areas like this with like minded folk, but that doesnt represent reality.
Yes, that is as it should be. As long as their "news" station can trot out one or two black people per week, at least in the background, all is fine.
