Does anyone here know what happens if you dont report a mistake in your checking account? Its not a huge amount, but its enough to make me happy. The change has happend for three days. And i have been waiting to see if it changes back.
I suspect you would call them if they made a mistake that hurt you. You ought to call them and let them know of their error.
In my experience, the second you think they're never going to catch their error, they catch their error. Might as well take care of it now.
You should report it to the bank and go to sleep knowing that you did a good deed. This is a bank, the bottom line are numbers. Of course they will find out, and when they do, they'll just debit your account. If you don't have enough funds at that time, you can pay the NSF fee.
i like drapg's suggestion best. to be honest though i guess i need to report it. the only thing is i have been jobless for about 2 months. and could really use a break. its only about $800 but still.
Sorry to hear that you've been out of work man. But trust me, the man upstairs will take care of you. Don't let hard times flaw your character and dignity. Best wishes. PS. What is it that you do? Perhaps I can point you in the right direction.
Report it, because its another customers deposit.Eventually they will find the error and take it out of your bank account.
I actually was credited $368 and some change at a bank probably 10 years ago. I called them and asked them to go over all my deposits with me, etc. We could not find any error or any extra deposit. I asked the woman what I should do and she told me that, as far as the bank was concerned, there was no error and that money belonged to me. I decided not to spend it and leave it for a while to see if it got subtracted. After about six weeks it was still there and my wife (then girlfriend) were about to open a joint checking account and I needed to close mine down. I called once more an explained the situation and the gentleman on the phone insisted that they had no records to the contrary and that money must be mine and that I must've made a mistake. So, I closed the account, withdrew all the money including the extra $368+ and smiled all the way to my new bank.
Thanks for the link. I am taking a course of commercial paper this semester and the story was an excellent read.
I had an idiot teller at Bank of America tell me I was 30 dollars short in my calculations, so she "corrected" it and added it to my account. I checked my account online and BofA deducted $30 from my checking account because of her error. Stupid people second guessing me.
Did you read the whole story? The money was legally his and he ended up just giving it back to the bank for nothing. What a dumbass. Such a disappointing story... It should be retitled "Man 0, Bank 1" instead of "Man 1, Bank 0."
The first bank account I opened after college, the new bank chick added two zeroes. When I went to the ATM a few days later, I found I had $140,000 in my account. I went in and reported it and they assured me they would take care of the problem. A few days later, I come back to the ATM and my account reads -$138,580. Back to the teller... this time they fixed it properly and I got two free months of checking for the trouble.
