Voters grapple with political motivations driving COVID-19 response as deadly pandemic hits home

Tony Green of Dallas, a supporter of President Donald Trump, said he believed the coronavirus pandemic was a hoax designed to create panic and hurt the president's chances of reelection -- until, at 43, he ended up hospitalized with the virus.

After Green hosted a family gathering at his home in June, he says more than a dozen of his family members contracted COVID-19. Two of them died from complications.

"I'd love to take it back. I'd love to still have him and her here," Green told ABC News. "I'd like to have the opportunity to go back and save others and take this whole thing much more seriously."

Green posted an op-ed column about his family's story in July.

"Having been a denier, carelessly shuffling through this pandemic, making fun of those wearing masks and social distancing leads me to believe, my actions convinced both our families it was safe when it wasn't," he wrote.

At the start of the year, while a bitter impeachment trial was underway in the Senate, the U.S. reported its first coronavirus case. Pronounced partisan splits on how to address the imminent crisis soon boiled over.

"Now the Democrats are politicizing the coronavirus," Trump said at a packed rally in Charleston, South Carolina, on Feb. 28, as reported U.S. cases neared 70.

"This is their new hoax," he said.

By late March, as the U.S. surpassed 1,000 deaths, Trump was looking to reopen
the country by Easter, emphasizing the negative economic impacts of a shutdown, while Democrats argued the administration was muffling its scientists and downplaying the severity of the outbreak.

Despite the criticism, Trump continued to present ideas at odds with most scientific recommendations -- from holding mega-rallies across the country and touting an unproven drug, to suggesting the potential of injecting bleach as therapy, all while repeating that the virus was "going away."

Green, who is still wrestling with the loss of his family members, said he is still voting for Trump in November. But he hopes Americans on both sides of the aisle -- including the president -- realize the severity of the pandemic.

"My concern is that people are still either denying or downplaying the virus and thinking that somehow it really is about the election," Green said. "And for some, it may be, but, you know, people's lives are at stake, including your own."

I'm sad that people believe that a global pandemic is seen as a political point for the United States. I work in the medical field and felt terrified when I saw that a city in China the size of Chicago was getting quarantined in early 2020. I remember telling people in February that this might be a very big deal. And yet people didn't care. And they still didn't care until people they knew that died or saw loved ones die. Seeing the eyes of children that lost their parent at a very young age will always stay with me and make me believe that this country failed us as a whole. I also came to point that people are not good as a whole. They are scared dumb creatures that are selfish and only care for themselves. This will never defeat my belief and work to save people but my belief that humans are generally good is destroyed.

Well, Tony is going to have to live with the fact he let Donald Trump's lies influence his family's health and ultimately caused some of their deaths. Then knowing all of that full well he votes for incompetent, lying creep a second time. The people on this side all knew it was dangerous. You deserve what you get dude.

Wow, this article does at least give us context for someone like Ted Cruz. It's one thing to have a scumbag insult your wife and for you to then support the scumbag at all costs. It's another thing altogether for the scumbag to basically have killed two of your family members with his incompetence, and you're still going to vote for him.

I also love the Susan Collins style concern and the "hopes" that Trump has learned a lesson. (never).

He told everyone that he could shoot someone on 5th Avenue and not lose a vote. He’s literally killed over 200,000 Americans on Main Street and he still has imbeciles that will still punch their ballot for him even after he was responsible for sacrificing Maw Maw and Uncle Randy for political gain. The amount of stupid that is required for that jump in logic is so staggeringly enormous that it makes my brain hurt.

After the past 4 years (and even more if you count his campaigning), anyone who still supports Trump is just not anyone I want to deal with on any level, there's just no upside to it. It makes me sad for some people who I care about.

What's that joke: the hardest thing about being in a cult is having to constantly explain how it's not a cult.

I saw a video where some guy was screaming that he’d give his life for Trump, that he’d die for him, as Trump was doing his drive around the block waving at his cult members while at Walter Reed

these cult members will die, or sacrifice their family, for the dear leader

I once thought a decade ago when I was a teen and got my first computer, that the internet would accelerate progress, by giving people such vast knowledge at the tips of their fingers, I thought it would really unite people and educate people, but how foolish I was to not ponder the exact opposite.

It's been unreal. COVID is a hoax, climate change is fake news, and universal healthcare is communism (or fiscally unattainable pie in the sky for the "moderates".), as well as a hoard of other bullshit, surrounding social programs, racial issues, and whatever the **** else like the earth being flat.

An age of mas disinformation and confusion.

Being stupid is an innate quality for some - no technology, no matter how advanced, can ever fix that

Sounds like a battered wife protecting her dexamethasone addled pornstar paying husband. Not cuck behavior at all.

Actually it has done that and much more.

It’s the dimwits left behind that are pulling us back. They think everything can be reset like some time machine, then nuke China or any other newcomer that out hustles us.

Cities are growing more rapidly than everywhere else. Companies won’t drive into small towns to bail out the locals anymore. Not with the internet and globalization making the rest of the world available for "hard workin" no degree labor.

Do or die time. Purging non-whites and “lib traitors” won’t put that genie back into the bottle.

Middle America better grasp that quickly or the ghastly thought of rounding up people wearing glasses won't be some far off history lesson.
