I mean this guy is a STAR in the making .... Could well be ROOKIE OF THE YR and be an ALL STAR NEXT YR. I dont see DARKO even being close to what this guy could be 5 yr from now. This guy SALES TICKETS and you know what ur are going to get a 20pts+ guy .. Darko might best be a Rik Smits or Zydrunas Ilgauskas. Sometime you just have to take sure talents over size. Can you imagine the Pistons now C Ben Wallace PF R. Wallace SF Carmelo SG R. Hamilton PG C. Billups Bench: Prince, Okur, Aktins, Williamson They would be in the FINALS THIS YR with THAT TEAM (even if they didn't do the R. Wallace trade ... )
Well, Melo will ride the bench all year just like Darko because of rookie discrimination by Brown. Also, often stat is not transferrable from team to team. Take a look at the stat of SAR.
I read somewhere that somebody said in the organazation "No, Prince is a better player". I ROFL for at least 20 mins.
If the Nuggets drafted Carmelo, then I don't think they wouldve gone after Sheed. People tend to forget that trades and acquistitons only happen when needed. Who knows how good, or bad the Pistons would be with melo. Rip, Chauncey and Melo..trying to get shots. Wow. Darko is only 18..give the guy some time. The person I really want to see is Tskitishvili from Denver.
They want to win the Finals, not play in it. They needed a taller front court and they couldn't expect that Sheed would land in their laps.
Hate to break it to you, but not particularly. Anthony would have been a bench scorer for them. Why? It's called defense, shot selection, and attitude. His numbers would be nothing like what they are with Denver. Detroit played Denver twice this year. In one game no one on the Nuggets scored in double figures (including Anthony--who was guarded by Prince), and in the other Anthony refused to play part of the game.
Not at all, Marshmelo is a very poor defender, and that's what Dumars wants out of the SF position. The main scorers are Rip and Chauncey (and now 'Sheed). And as it has already been stated, if the Pistons drafted Melo, they wouldn't have gotten Rasheed.
Hindsight being 20/20, would they take Carmelo? The jury's out on that because after they drafted Darko they acquired Larry Brown, eminent hater of rookies. Darko would still have been a bench beeyotch, but might have seen more playing time. Detroit has to get a little creative this summer with the cap in order to keep both Sheed and Okur, the latter having pouted a lot when Sheed took his minutes. Will they keep all of those guys: Okur, Sheed, Darko? Has Okur adjusted to his new role? (I haven't checked to see if he's getting the minutes anymore.) And if they traded Darko, would they get anything more than a bag of popcorn and a Diet Coke in return, or will they stick to their guns thinking he'll be a star in a few years?
Yeah I guess. I'm sure he'll be a good player because everyone is sold on him. It's not possible for EVERYONE to be wrong is it? But from what I've seen of him. He's put on muscle but he seems to not be so comfortable with the added size. He looks a little awkward out there... so so raw. None of the grace and ease with which Carmelo plays the game. Sure he could be the next nowitzki, but he could also be the next Radmanovic. Which ain't bad, but he was a second pick.
I'm kind of surprised that Detroit didn't take Melo. Because they're in an unusual position of being a championship caliber team despite having the #2 pick. I'd figure they'd bring in someone who can help immediately. When instead, they took a 17 yr old foreign player. Darko had the problem of needing to adjust to the NBA while still at a high school age. His development curve will very likely mirror someone like T-Mac or J O'Neal, who didn't do jack in their early years. It seems that Darko's upper limit is similar to Yao's. A tall center with excellent shooting touch and great post moves. But he's obviously much more raw at this point in his career.
Absolutely agree. And further...Anthony has taken 21.6% (over 1 of 5) shots for a team that put up over 400+ shots more than the Pistons. If Carmelo would have taken his 1,401 shots in a Pistons uni, it would be close to 1 in every 4 shots...not going to happen under Larry Brown. The Pistons spread the ball around with Rip Hamilton only taking 18.5% of their shots.
So I see the Pistons' Front Office decided to post today. They didn't know they would be getting Sheed, and they went after a big man. Makes sense. Problem is, what we've seen so far from this person is that he's a scrub. Don't try to justify not getting Anthony. "oh no, we don't want the better player on our team.....give us some scrub that a coached picked who most likely won't even be there long enough to see whether the kid can actually play down the line or not"
What we've seen so far is a kid who would be in High School right now playing garbage minutes. And Brown suggested 'Melo, Joe Dumars was the one who stuck to his guns on Darko, the gap between the West and the East is size up front, not SFs. Next year, with the Pistons losing quite possibly Elden Campbell and Corliss Williamson, Darko will get more minutes.
It still seems like a good pick to me. Detroit has the luxury that they don't have to play him big minutes because they have a good team. He's more of a gamble than Anthony, but if they can come away with a talented frontcourt player, that's worth more than a swingman.
In the SHORT term they probably do. And in "merchandise sales" they probably do. But they are building this team for the LONG term so they went with the player they feel best fits the team long term. They obviously liked him. I dont think any of us really know what he is capable of. All we know is what other media sources SAY he can do. Too early to tell with this pick. Clearly long term they are looking at a front line of Okur and Darko at the 4 and 5 and Prince at the 3. Okur can hit the outside jumper and they believe that Darko is physical enough to play in the low post and yet still bring his game outside.
