That's exactly right. But just for kicks, I'll also offer a rational argument to support the logic of the NBA's 3-team tiebreaker. Let's say you have 3 teams that finish with the same record. However, these 3 teams DID NOT play each other at all in the regular season. So a round-robin series of head-to-head games is scheduled, with each team playing the other 2 teams four times. At the end of the round-robin series, Team A is 5-3, Team B is 4-4, and Team C is 3-5. The final rankings for each team should then be self-evident.
