Very nice rationale by Kayman. Elias told us the same thing, and they're confirming with the league right now. But Kayman figured it out before I did, for certain. Heh ... on a semi-related topic -- in my opinion, typos happen on-line, and they're a fact of life. But if you're missing every 3rd or 4th word, you should slow down and proofread yourself; it just shows respect towards those trying to read what you wrote. If it's not important enough for the person who wrote it to do at least a basic check, I just make a judgment call and assume it's not important enough for me to read. Tim
Kayman is right about the Three-Team Tiebreaker. I just checked that out from ESPN site, http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/standings I just found this from NBA official site, Three Teams - Games vs. Each Other - Cumulative Winning%/Games among tied teams - Winning %/Conference - Winning %/Conference - Winning %/Division(If Same Division) - Winning %/Division(If Same Division) - Winning %/Conference - Playoff Teams - Winning %/Conference - Playoff Teams = Winning %/Other Conference - Playoff Teams = Winning %/Other Conference - Playoff Teams - Best Point Differential/Offense & Defense - Best Point Differential/Offense & Defense http://www.nba.com/statistics/playoff_picture.html
I suggest everyone read Kayman's post before posting a new one. Too much misleading or redunant analysis already
BOTTOM LINE is that IF we win tonight (we're favored) and the San Antonio Spurs beat the Blazers(probable) then mathematically we're in the playoffs because in that scenario in case all 4 teams are tied, we'd get the eighth spot or if it were to come to a three-way between DEN/HOU/UTA, DEN would be 5-3, we'd be 4-4, and UTA would be 3-5. If we can continue to play the way we did against the clippers (wow, the clippers right?), then we'll clinch a playoff spot tonight. I think SA will do its job.
Not Exactly! If we win the next game and lose the remaining three, and BOTH Utah and Denver win the remainging games, the three team will end of with identical records and then Denver will be the 7th, Jazz 8th and Rockets 9th. This is just math in theory. In reality, I don't want to be in Denver or Jazz's positions. Not Exactly!
People need to calm down. Even though our magic number is 2, we cannot clintch today . Assume Rockets win and Portland lose today, then here are the records: Rockets 44-35, Denver 41-38, Portland 41-38, Utah 41-38. Assume the worse cases for the remaining games, then 1. Rockets finish 44-38 2. Utah finish 44-38 3. Portland and Denver has one remaining game. Two case: a) Denver 44-38, Portland 43-39. This case Rockets, Utah, and Denver in a 3-way tie. According to the tie breaker rules, Denver will the 7th, Utah 8th, and Rockets 9th. b) Portland 43-39, Denver 44-38. This Rockets acutally 8th.
You need to calm down, no one else is screaming with size 9 font . In a three way tie between Rockets, Utah and Denver Denver is 7th, Rockets are 8th and Utah is 9th. In a three way tie between Portland, Houston and Utah, Rockets are 7th, Utah is 8th and Portland is 9th
Hmm, I forgot to add Rocket's win vs Denver into the 3-way tie-breaker situation. Still, I am not too hot in counting the eggs too early. Rockets had one whopping wins after this thread has started. Counting magic numbers before the game is kind of pointless.
Never heard people so resistant to good news. We can clinch today. We have to win, and Portland has to lose. Go back and check out Kayman's post. He sums it up nicely. And if you don't feel like trusting your fellow clutchizens, NBA officials also called us up today to confirm that we can clinch tonight. It's on. Tim
If Utah win tomorrow's game, Utah has the tie-breaker not Houston because they have better conference record! Again, We can NOT official clinch the play off berth tonight!
In a three-way tie the first tie-breaker is the head-head record between all teams. See my previous post. In that case Houston is ahead of Utah
I don't know about virtually clinching. I like to see the Rockets actually clinch the playoffs, but one thing that I am quite glad is that all those tough teams in the West are also battling for playoff position (homecourt advantage etc). This really helps out the Rockets. Sure if Rockets win their own games they are in, but hey it helps that probably Minny, San Antonio, Sacramento, and the Lakers will all be playing to win their last few games. I know in many seasons past that top teams would rest some of their players the last few games if their seeding was set, but with the top spots in the conference all within their grasps I hope for a dog fight (i.e, hoping Sacramento, SA, Lakers, Minny all win - how many times do you guys root for those teams?). Just a thought.
In order to have 44-38 records to have three way tie with Rockets, Utah must win the next three which include the game on Saturday againist Rockets. Records this year 1/26/03 Utah Win 83-76 12/03/03 Utah lose 101-107 1/3/04 Utah lose 63-84 Coming Saturday's Game, Utah must win to tie the 44-38 records, Thus the series is 2-2, Utah conference record is 27-21 Huston conference record is 19-21 Utah has the tie breaker over Houston! I am getting Frustrated
If I were you, I'd be frustrated too. Heck, I'd get frustrated by everything I see in life if I were you. The NBA just called the Rockets today and said WE CAN CLINCH TODAY, and it's comfirmed by Tim, who is the Rockets' VP of marketing. You are still in disbelief, because you want to believe your own theory and won't give up. I like your persistence, but I know you are frustrated and upset by the fact that the Earth is round too. You think, therefore you exist. You exist, therefore you are frustrated.
