So you are perfectly OK with shaming someone because they are homosexual, but you are not OK with the homosexual being offended by the shaming? That says volumes about you.
I shame people with no sense of humor and also can't laugh at themselves in a healthy way. As Andy Richter would say, at least once a week the queen of England probably gets **** on her hand when she goes to wipe. We're all just shedding, oozing gross bodily functions and quite frankly some of the greatest genuine pleasures in life come from sharing our gross bodily functions with another. People that take themselves way too seriously or are ALWAYS serious about everything disgust me. It's a truly miserable way to live. Take the giant stick out of your asses and try to find humor in literally anything when at all possible. You'll live longer and will enjoy life more while living it, and can still tackle the big issues that should continue to be taken seriously.
Yup...I smoked for 10 years...when people tried to shame me, I usually smiled/said OK, and then lit up another cigarette when they turned their back. I never smoked in the house and usually only smoked a half-a-pack unless I was drinking. When I was in Korea, my wife had recently quit back in the States so she told me I should quit too...I laughed and said sure...when I was 30 (only 25 at the time). Funny thing was, by the time I was about to hit 30, I was so ready to quit...but, I made sure to smoke every last cigarette in the days leading up to my 30th birthday. I had let a number of people know what was coming so I kept getting hounded every day about why I was still smoking and why didn't I just quit right then...didn't matter, kept smoking until the last day. When I finished my last one at 11 pm the night before, I took all my cigarette paraphernalia, walked across the street to my bud's house, gave it to him, and walked back to the house. Haven't picked up a cigarette since. Also haven't shamed any smokers since...they need to come to their own decision, or it won't stick.
Too many people smoke in inappropriate places, I've had a couple of arguments with people smoking in children's areas where smoking is not permitted. They can swing if they want. Personally, I don't think I should have to unwillingly accept my family breathing in carcinogenic second-hand smoke. There's freedom, and then there are freedoms that inhibit others' freedoms. Second-hand smoke is ****ed up enough to where I think smoking in public should be pretty highly regulated. Not that I'm going to be the one doing that regulation, I'd vote for it is what I'm saying, I'd only "shame" people fore smoking in areas that are highly inappropriate / prohibited.
I am responding to your post. Defend how it is OK to shame someone who is gay or handicapped or black but it is not OK for the gay person, the handicapped person or the black person to not be offended.
Shaming is perfectly fine by me for morally reprehensible acts or that break the law. Cheating on your spouse? Driving drunk? Smoking/drinking while pregnant? Sexist/racist comments or jokes? Not wearing a mask? Animal or children abuse? I have no problem shaming and scolding anyone even strangers on the street. But being fat, homosexual or a drug user no.
Things like obesity and harmful drug use should definitely be discouraged (for personal health reasons, potential endangerment of others with drug use, and societal cost for the healthcare), which would be a distinction from things like homosexuality. Discouragement and shame is probably a blurry line for many.
It is possible to be critical without being a bully. I do think that if people do bad things then they should feel bad about it.
If someone is smoking in the middle of a playground fine... but someone walking down the street smoking, or out on the porch or in their car? No... I’m not saying anything. Hell I have seen pregnant women smoke and I didn’t say anything. I have never smoked but I know it is an addiction that doesn’t suddenly go away because someone is pregnant. The women I knew who did smoke already felt shame.

A close male friend 2. A stranger 3. An in-law 4. His boss. 5. His female boss 6. Interviewer for a job 7. He was getting knighted, Queen of England Shaming meter rises...
