Trump has been, for the duration of his presidency, fixated on staging military parades, but only of a certain sort. In a 2018 White House planning meeting for such an event, Trump asked his staff not to include wounded veterans, on grounds that spectators would feel uncomfortable in the presence of amputees. “Nobody wants to see that,” he said.

How do you fill out the ballot for this?

On Memorial Day 2017, Trump visited Arlington National Cemetery, a short drive from the White House. He was accompanied on this visit by John Kelly, who was then the secretary of homeland security, and who would, a short time later, be named the White House chief of staff. The two men were set to visit Section 60, the 14-acre area of the cemetery that is the burial ground for those killed in America’s most recent wars. Kelly’s son Robert is buried in Section 60. A first lieutenant in the Marine Corps, Robert Kelly was killed in 2010 in Afghanistan. He was 29. Trump was meant, on this visit, to join John Kelly in paying respects at his son’s grave, and to comfort the families of other fallen service members. But according to sources with knowledge of this visit, Trump, while standing by Robert Kelly’s grave, turned directly to his father and said, “I don’t get it. What was in it for them?” Kelly (who declined to comment for this story) initially believed, people close to him said, that Trump was making a ham-handed reference to the selflessness of America’s all-volunteer force. But later he came to realize that Trump simply does not understand non-transactional life choices.

“He can’t fathom the idea of doing something for someone other than himself,” one of Kelly’s friends, a retired four-star general, told me. “He just thinks that anyone who does anything when there’s no direct personal gain to be had is a sucker. There’s no money in serving the nation.” Kelly’s friend went on to say, “Trump can’t imagine anyone else’s pain. That’s why he would say this to the father of a fallen marine on Memorial Day in the cemetery where he’s buried.”

Well according to the President and Attorney General, it's ok to vote against him and for him. To test out the system. You know, a real white hat hacker set up.

"The president believes that nothing is worth doing without the promise of monetary payback, and that talented people who don’t pursue riches are “losers.” (According to eyewitnesses, after a White House briefing given by the then-chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Joe Dunford, Trump turned to aides and said, “That guy is smart. Why did he join the military?”)

trump doesnt see anything past monetary payback when being a prestigious joint chief of staff in the military is a huge deal and what you expect to be smart guys. its clear trump has no clue about how folks work hard. its like astronauts you look at their resume and their hoss attributes not monetary. no wonder trump is jealous of bezos schooling him in the monetary game.

the things trump says are blasphemy first then go down the list of insults and dispicable. this is one of those times where I can truly say that trump disgusts me..

.i think his dishonoring .disrespecting of the military is probably one of his biggest a hole aspects. i cant believe guys like crenshaw or kelly would allow this.

all the pro military folk in republican party this should have them saying something and yet not a peep....and you only ever hear from romney. funny part is I legit would vote romney over biden..

It's clear he values no lives but his own. Not even those that are doing his bidding.

Sounds like @Wattafan after Trump commuted Roger Stone’s sentence only to go back and start kissing his ass again.

Trumpanzees have repeatedly shown that they have no principles or values, other than supporting Trump and owning the libs. One of the most pathetic group of people alive.

There's no reason to use that type of wording. You're talking about literal people in my family that I love. Be more constructive.

I just got the full article from The Atlantic. All the info confirmed.

I was in the military and I'm always a little embarassed by the attention, "thank you for your service." But also grateful to be appreciated.

Problem is, most Trump supporters will not see this or will disbelieve it. The eggs and the sugar are already in the cake mix. Oven is preheated.

Those who appreciate the military the most would excoriate Trump for this. But Jim Jones is making them drink the Flavor Aid (the People's Temple was a little cash-strapped; Kool Aid might have been beyond their means).

My family is full of Trumpers that I love dearly. I think you are making a fuss about nothing. Even those people I love have disturbing views on race and their support of a purely fascistic new form of government.

People are complicated. That’s why I don’t like saying that Trumpers are either Neo Nazis or they aren’t because people like my mother are more complicated than that on race and other bigoted issues.

So with all due respect, calm down. It’s okay to call a spade a spade with Trumpers. I just think we have to do better about adding context to the complexities of their worldview which you understand if you grew up in the house that I did.

"People are complicated" damn right they are. my mother voted for Obama twice and couldn't stand H Clinton just as i could not either. the difference between her and i is I would never vote for Trump so I just didn't vote at all.

that's the trouble you get into when you only have two real choices and they are both god awful. as I'm sure you know many many countries have 6-7 parties that have members in their senate/congress/etc here we don't.

you then get dipshits like above that use language like that and vilify wide swaths of millions and millions of people. that are simply just too ignorant of many things and want to think about what is most convenient while they lead busy lives. they are BOTH dealing with absolutes and probably need to look into some philosophy principles that could help with that.

You don't vote at all? What about your local elections? City council? Sheriff? Representative? Senator? Don't let your disdain of the Presidential candidates prevent you from voting. The local elections tend to impact one's life in a more personal way than the Federal election.
