So let's talk about 2 things that are related with regards to refereeing, the technicals they call, the likelihood they will call fouls with regards to players showing frustration, the whining about calls and actually challenging referees a call they made - especially when they clearly fouled someone. First, let's get this out the way, there's inconsistency from individual referees to how to deal with players challenging whistles and or show their frustration. We all saw Porzingis just throwing a fist over a call that he was 100% justified in doing, but that's besides the point. Now, did anyone see Dwight Howard today?! He literally said f***, walked towards the refs, and showed his frustration in different ways on several occasions and did not get a technical. That needs to be corrected. Second, with the amount of players that whine, challenge and whatnot after almost every single call or non-call when they feel they got hit, they are only exacerbating the problem. I know when I was refereeing, the more people started whining, the less likely I was going to call fouls. There was a battle between two bigs, just like Howard and Nurkic tonight - which to the referees credit was handled very well with just letting them go - and both were equally fouling each other, very vocal about non-calls and just getting more frustrated. At some point you have to call a foul and that should be the end of it. Both players in that instance know what they are doing and they're both equally guilty of fouling. To then, as Howard did tonight, keep on whining, huffing and puffing, walking around like it's unfair, is unsportsmanlike to me and that should warrant a T since it's showed continuously. Now, regardless of what happens, the incessant whining by these NBA players after a call needs to be dealt with. I've never seen so much overt display of frustration where every single call is challenged and it's a bad look. I don't want to take emotion away, but when you give Porzingis a T for one arm motion, yet you let all of these yapping, walking around, throwing hissy fits all across the court go, then that needs to be addressed. Right now, it's too inconsistent from referee to referee how they deal with players and I give credit to them for letting a lot of stuff go. However, I rather see the whining lead to technicals after they've had enough as well as an immediate one to a guy like Howard walking towards a ref, cussing and throwing a fit. Emotional reactions are part of the game, but there needs to be some common sense and I'm sure if you show both clips of KP & DH, that everybody agrees KP's should not have been a T and DH clearly one or at least arguably one. Lastly, when player clearly commit a foul and they whine or challenge it or players want a call for a touch foul when on the other hand when they commit that whine about it too, how do they expect: A) the referees to know when you're actually getting fouled B) the referees to trust them to be honest C) the referees to deal with their constant frustration It's not going to be in your favour most likely and players need to come to grips with that. Period!
Don't care if they kick out Mavs players fairly or unfairly. I do agree with your point about inconsistent officiating
With all the cameras and sensors the NBA has invested in, I expected development of algorithmic violation detection that surpasses the effectiveness of human refs.
seems to be the problem even during the hakeem/jordan era when i started watching. nothing has changed, all refs suck. we need robot terminators to ref. where is elon musk when we need him?
