IF IT IS PRIVATIZED - What ever company or companies that take of must be MANDATED to do the same. They should *HAVE* prepay for 75 yrs of pensions that are the same as the USPS would have given the employees. Rocket River
The other carriers are fairly parasitic in their "disruption" and wouldn't be able to provide USPS services without jacking up rates to a level unseen by any living boomer. This is one of those dances where Cons are all talk to brandish their libertarian bonafides, then someone like Palin/Trump/TeaBag opportunist comes and says, "Enough talk, Ima do it and let Ayn Rand's invisible fart deal with it!"
Prepaying pensions isn't even the biggest problem. The 2006 bill that mandated prefunding pensions also regulated stamp prices. The USPS lost the ability to increase the price of stamps (outside of adjusting prices for inflation). The USPS is basically stuck on 2006 pricing despite the fact that mail volumes have rapidly declined since then. The USPS has even tried different ways to get around the law and the courts of blocked them every time so there's no way to raise prices to reflect current mail volume. No delivery service (public or private) can turn a profit when it is mandated to deliver mail at a loss. I think the USPS would still operate in the red even if it didn't have the pension mandates because the stamp prices are so out of whack nowadays.
Why do you think he’s been telling his supporters that voting by mail is bad. His sabotaging of the post office will disproportionately affect the other side.
Congress would override him for one. However, he couldn't do it. USPS is in the Constitution. Only Congress and then States can change the Constitution.
He doesn’t have to shut it down he’s doing enough by just slowing it down... “DeJoy, a former North Carolina logistics executive, was appointed to lead USPS by the agency's Board of Governors in May despite his complete lack of experience at the Postal Service and his potential conflicts of interest, which have drawn scrutiny from Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and other lawmakers. After taking charge in mid-June, the new Postmaster General wasted little time rolling out changes to USPS that postal workers said undermine the agency's core mission and potentially set the stage for privatization. During an open session last week with the Board of Governors, DeJoy rebuked lawmakers for "sensationalizing" major mail backlogs reported in states across the nation and downplayed the resulting delays as "isolated, operational incidents." Postal workers, for their part, have warned that the delays appear to be a direct consequence of DeJoy's policies barring overtime and prohibiting the sorting of mail ahead of morning deliveries.”
House Democrats demand Postal Service chief roll back changes ahead of Election Day House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and 174 other Democrats in the chamber signed a letter sent Wednesday to the new Postmaster General demanding the agency reverses operational changes they argue would hamper mail-in voting on Nov. 3. "It is always essential that the Postal Service be able to deliver mail in a timely and effective manner. During the once-in-a-century health and economic crisis of COVID-19, the Postal Service's smooth functioning is a matter of life-or-death, and is critical for protecting lives, livelihoods and the life of our American Democracy," the lawmakers wrote. "The House is seriously concerned that you are implementing policies that accelerate the crisis at the Postal Service, including directing Post Offices to no longer treat all election mail as First Class. If implemented now, as the election approaches, this policy will cause further delays to election mail that will disenfranchise voters and put significant financial pressure on election jurisdictions." The new head of the Postal Service, Louis DeJoy, a donor to President Donald Trump, recently made a series of changes to the agency that could disrupt mail for millions of Americans, particularly absentee and mail-in ballots ahead of Election Day. The cost-cutting measures, intended to address the Postal Service's longtime financial problems, were imposed last month after DeJoy, who owned a North Carolina supply-chain, took over the top job in June. DeJoy, 63, is the first postmaster general in nearly two decades who is not a career postal employee. DeJoy also eliminated overtime for hundreds of thousands of postal workers and mandates that mail is kept until the next day if distribution centers are running late. He also removed or reassigned nearly two dozen postal leaders, implemented a hiring freeze and requested "early retirement authority" for nonunion employees. Last week, the U.S. Postal Service announced a third-quarter net loss of $2.2 billion. In a statement, the agency said even Congressional relief funds of $10 billion would "not address the Postal Service's broken business model." “We will respond directly to the members of Congress," a Postal Service spokesperson said. They also referred to comments DeJoy made last week where he maintained the agency could handle the surge, but "cannot correct the errors of the Election Boards if they fail to deploy processes that take our normal processing and delivery standards into account.” Pelosi and Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer also had a closed-door meeting with DeJoy this month that Schumer described as "heated." House Democrats have demanded measures in any final pandemic spending bill that would roll back the operational changes and give the agency $25 billion in one-time funding. At Wednesday's briefing at the White House, Trump railed against the Postal Service's handling the vast amount of mail-in voting during the pandemic and the funding request. "The post office has been run poorly for many, many decades," he said. "Great people in the post office, incredible people but they've had very bad leadership for many years." He added, "And the bill’s not going to happen because they don't even want to talk about it because we can't give them the kind of ridiculous things that they want." CLARIFICATION: (Aug. 13, 2020, 8:10 a.m. ET): An earlier version of this article imprecisely described Louis DeJoy's relationship to President Donald Trump. Although DeJoy is an ally of Trump and a donor to his campaign, he was appointed to the job of postmaster general by the postal service's board of governors, not directly by Trump. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.nbcnews.com/news/amp/ncna1236570
I don't know why the Postmaster General is this brazen and why he hasn't resigned today after what Trump said that threw him under the bus and into potential criminal liability. Tampering with the Mail is a federal crime. 18 US Code 1708. Trump just established predicate for a crime that falls flat on the postmaster general. If Biden is sworn into office by Chief Justice Roberts, he can immediately fire Bill Barr and replace the Attorney General who can order a special counsel to investigate with full prosecutor power the postmaster general for this crime. What needs to happen ASAP is the Judiciary Committee in the House needs to immediately send an official notice to order the postmaster general to withhold documents and communication & open an inquiry. That gives the Special Counsel the ability to call for documentary evidence, and if that evidence is not received or available, obstruction of justice charges could be charged. I don't know how Republican voters here can be completely silent about this. This is how dictators "win" elections, and you guys should be ashamed of yourselves.
If Trump had it his way the US Government would stop funding the US Post Office, the schools, social security and healthcare. He wants everything put up for grabs to the highest bidder, so the rich can get richer and the rest can just f**k off and deal with it. It's time to vote out the Snake Oil Salesman who doesn't give a damn about the average American.
Risking jail time to "own the libs" is pretty telling. Either they are incredibly dumb or they are confident they can get away with stealing the election to keep Trump in power which I'm sure will go over well in this country. But I guess it's kind of par for the course with Trumpism. Last month my dad was let go from his job of 20 years, and he qualified for coverage on the ACA but instead has been paying Cobra for insurance because they hate Obama. I looked myself and he could have only been paying 400 dollars a month for family coverage. Instead he's paying like 3 grand a month out of savings.... because of Obama..... It's seriously amazing how successful FoxNews and the billionaires that fund the Republican party have been at creating a cult following for a party that will vote and act against their self interest 365 days a year 24 hours a day.
That is every Republican since Reagan. It's only that Trump has the criminal brazenness that no other Republicans have had to just say the quiet part out loud and break laws in order to get what the billionaires oligarchs want.
I think at this point Trump believes he could get away with murder. He has built a team of judges and crooked lawyers that have kept him out of prison/jail for so long that he feels invincible. When serial killers start getting bolder they start making mistakes and finally get caught. I hope the same happens with Trump. Time will tell.
He already has made mistakes that will get him convicted of crimes if he loses. He's acting now though like a dictator who will be imprisoned if he doesn't steal the election more than he's just feeling untouchable. I assume its a bit of both cockiness/sloppiness and 3rd world country dictatorial desperation, but there's no question now that its leaning much more towards the latter ever since about two years ago when he was named as directing crimes that his personal attorney was going to prison for. This is a very very dangerous time for this country because when an animal is cornered when they feel like they are about to get attacked, they are at their most dangerous.
