Over the last month or so i've noticed my PS2 is having problems reading my discs. I guess the best way to describe it would be the PS2 starts to make skipping noises or has a soft grinding noise. Once the noise begins the game freezes up. Once the noise stops the game continues as if nothing ever happened. Over the last week it has gotten to the point where i can no longer play any of my games which is very frustrating considering i just bought a 50 dollar baseball game and a brand new 25 dollar control.

Has anyone else experienced this problem or does anyone know how to fix it without having to spend 170 bucks on a new system?

I have a friend whose PS2 was acting up. He said looked up a guide here to fix it. However, I don't know the exact nature of his breakdown, so I'm not sure if it's applicable to you. You should probably read them to see if it might help.

I came across that this morning. Basically it gives you a few different ideas, none of which i think will work

One idea was to put scotch tape on the face of your disc. Another was to open up the PS2 and change the voltage. Then another was to open up your PS2 and use a vaccum attachment to suck all the dirt out of the system.

I've already tried a cd cleaner which worked to no avail. Yesterday i was able to load up a game to it's opening screen. Now it won't read the disc at all.

I fixed it!!! I took the whole damn thing apart. Cleaned the lens, uplugged a few different wires and replugged them in. And did a few other things involving the little device that makes the cd spin and the lens. It's working perfect now!!!

    nevermind

it worked great for 30 minutes then it started doing it again. It sounds like there is some kind of problem with the laser moving back and forth. Still working on it

i have the same problem with my x box. I am thinking about taking it to a electronic store to see if they could repair it.

I think i've got it fixed now. I've been playing for about an hour with no problems whatsoever.

The 2 two bars on the side of the laser were lubricated. The laser seemed to have trouble moving so that seems to have helped. I also noticed that the little white plastic piece that runs from the laser to the motor that controls the laser didn't have enough pressure applied to it. So whenever the laser would go back and forth it was skipping. I pushed it down real good trying to get more pressure applied on it.

So far everything seems to be working fine. I haven't put the top back on it yet though. I don't feel like having to take it apart a 3rd time if it starts having trouble again.

Just open it up, clean the area. Be careful not to damage the lens. If there is debris on the lens, then go ahead and clean it. Be careful with it. I had a problem like that, I messed around with it. And I have not had any problems with it since. I also installed a mod-chip a couple of months ago.
