It's not just Trump. American society has largely surrendered. When I saw armed anti-lockdown protesters showing up in mid May that told me we collectively didn't have the will to fight this. It's not just the Right but I still see many showing up at BLM protests not wearing masks.

While certainly a majority of the country takes this seriously with a highly infectious disease it is an only as strong as the weakest link. Minnesota can have a strong strategy but if a state like Florida doesn't take it seriously and many Minnesotans travel their and come back that cripples what Minnesota does.

We were pretty much doomed from the start. Every war is dependent on the willingness of the population to sustain it. A war against a contagious disease more so. At a time when our country was already divided with everything politicized including our health care system we weren't equipped to fight it. This is a crisis that requires national unity but instead it's just become another issue driving us apart.

trump prioritizes his ratings and indoor rallies over Covid
his supporters prioritized their haircuts and "reedom" over Covid
BLM prioritized standing up to systematic racism over Covid

Even though his rating is at an all time low, I don't get how 38% of Americans approve of Trump's Coronavirus response. 4,341,565 cases, 149,602 dead, 18 states hitting single day records this week, 4% of the world's population but 25% of the world's cases, and a President who has lied at every turn. Crazy!

I agree that we have managed to do things that few other countries could: politicize the virus, convince a portion of the public that the virus is a hoax, simultaneously demand states manage the response while doing everything possible to sabotage their efforts.

Lost someone very dear to me today to covid. She was like a grandmother to me. Her grandson is one of my best friends, and I've known him since I was five. I saw her a year and a half ago (I live halfway across the country now), and knew it'd probably be my last time seeing her, and I was at peace with that. She was 89.

She lives in a household with her daughter, son in law, and her grandson (my friend). She never left the house. My friend did. As did his parents a little. The daughter is sick as well. She's around 60. Not so bad though.

Just the thought of knowing that my friend was potentially an asymptomatic carrier and may have inadvertently killed his grandmother just kills me. It's horrible.

As I type, most of their family is at their house to comfort each other. They'll probably end up with it too.

    What in the actual f.

Sad story. That's the exact reason I have to quit teaching. I can't risk bringing the virus home to my mother. I couldn't bear knowing I had a choice to stay home, yet took that risk, and then spread the virus to her.

It's probably the worst aspect of this virus, to be honest. It's so bad on an emotional level.

My wife is resigning her preschool teacher job today. Her mother and stepfather moved here about 8 months ago and since COVID-19 she (we) is basically the only person they have any contact with (other than phone and internet). In addition, our oldest daughter was born with a heart defect (corrected by surgery when she was 5 days old) and is high risk. My wide has been teaching preschool for over 15 years, enjoys working with children and is very good at it, but they don't have a virtual leaning alternative and its just too much risk (interestingly enough, we are both in our sixties and her concerns haven't been for her own health). She is super stressed about telling her director today, and doesn't look forward to re-entering the job market after so many years teaching.

Trump certainly deserves a lot of blame but he's not solely responsible for the state we're in.

We still have a Federal system with 50 different state governments that have far more say in our daily lives than the Federal government. Also how we fight a contagious disease is very much dependent on individual actions. We can't do what happened in Wuhan and forcible lock everyone inside their homes and take people into custody who are out on the streets. This is war that no matter what our political leaders said ultimately comes down to what we as individuals are willing to do.

Very sorry to hear that and yes this is the real insidiousness of this disease that we can be asymptomatic and infect those we love.

Sadly more and more Americans have similar stories and before this is over all of us might know someone who died of this disease.

Sorry bro but the Great Triangulator has you in his sights. Forecast is Isosceles. This kind of failed state is what the founders wanted.
