It's a two way street. Billions of dollars in public research paved the way for this also The private markets aren't great at high risk research, as in research that doesn't show promise of monotization any time in the near future. Especially with publicly traded companies, investment in research and development needs return on investment soon.
Elon is just one small piece in the puzzle. Elon didn't invent lithium ion batteries. That was a collaboration of scientists from research universities using public grant money that started the initial difficult part of the research. That's just one aspect. Elon is a much more savy businessman than a design engineer. PHD scientists and engineers who do research on a daily basis are much more knowledgeable in terms of technical knowledge. I mean he's still extremely intelligent and not only that, he has charisma.

Sounds like we all agree, demand creates jobs. Elon building and managing the company is a huge part of the equation, as well as all of his employees that are actually doing the work, as well as all of the non-direct contributors, but ultimately at the end of the day demand creates jobs.
Well Tesla wasn't the first to develop electric cars. They were the ones who kept the vision and goals alive.
