This is the most on-brand Jefferson Beauregard Sessions thing ever. Disagree with him, but have to give him credit for staying on-brand.

Character and decency of traitors to the United States who were fighting to continue the Southern practice of slavery? Why should any of them be celebrated? These people arguing in favor of these Benedict Arnolds, who go around waving the Confederate flags, are idiots of the highest order. Stop this tomfoolery already...

Things that lasted longer than the Confederacy:

Bill O'Brien's tenure as the Houston Texans head coach
    Jeremy Lin's NBA career
Intel's use of 14nm process on its CPUs
    Obama's Presidency

150 years this question: how to deal with otherwise decent people who fought for an indecent cause?

I think a big problem has been to hide, whitewash and obfuscate the indecent cause behind their heroes who have been made to look decent and aspirational.

Jerry, the trailblazer, will never be forgotten on CF

I think a big problem is these were in large part good people caught up in the “us versus them“ mob mentality based on geographic residence...this was a different era. A name is simply a name

Lotsa good and honerable Wehrmacht officers in WWII. Lets start naming US military bases after them.

Whatever these people were, one side fought for the country we all live in, one side fought against the country we all live in.

They were all Americans regardless of the intentions to secede tho that’s the difference ..wouldn’t you say the Americans that declared CHOP/CHAZ to still be Americans even tho they want no part of being Americans with the sign “you are now leaving the US” ? You can also say the chop people are fighting against the country they live in as well

I don’t think I’d be building any CHAZ monuments or naming any military base Fort CHAZ though, especially if they decided to start a war against the US.

Americas who fought for a foreign army in treasonous rebellion against the lawful government.

The Weathermen were Americans fighting in an army of sorts. Fort Bill Ayers? You onboard? I was going to say Fort Timothy McVeigh, but I honestly think some would not see the problem.

deeds (war) versus causes (slavery) are different things, both awful in this case.

And your question applies to Sherman’s march, no? And many of the founding fathers.

The question of how to evaluate humans in their full context is not a simple one. Period. The failure of the 21st century so far is everyone rushing to make everything binary, IMHO.

I guess I put more blame on the confederates for the civil war. They caused the war they caused so many deaths. They were on the wrong side of history and rightfully so.

What I dont understand is why they were celebrated and honoured in the first place?
They were losers and according to what this forum says traitors of the nation.
It would be understandable if a couple of them were who had also other contibutions, but so many traitors?
I dont see elsewhere losers of a civil war and traitors to have so many monuments let alone whole military bases on their name.
