There's a presumption that for black students what is going on isn't emotionally charged and distracting. What makes something ridiculous or not?

In any case, the issue isnt with him denying the request, it's the way he responded to the request.

It is academically irresponsible to grade students differently based on race. That is ridiculous. The university should fire any professor who does this.

And no, the presumption is from those who assume all black students in the class would want to be graded more leniently. I already said black students would likely be affected more than other students by what is going on, but it doesn’t follow that they think they (as a racial group) should be graded differently.

I don't think students should be graded differently on race either. But these are white students asking for black students to get leniency and often times students do get leniency for emotional situations. So while I agree it should be fair, how do address situations where students get leniency for emotional distress but now you say that these students can't be graded differently?

Regardless, the professor's reaction was unprofessional.

Emotional distress should be judged on an individual, case-by-case basis and allowances can perhaps be made for exceptional cases. As the professor noted, he can’t make assumptions about which students are under the most emotional distress simply based on race (even if he knew everyone’s race, which he doesn’t).

And that's fine, but he probably should not have come across the way he did. Ultimately we don't know why he was suspended, whether this one the final straw to break the camel's back or if it was just a one time incident.

I am concerned that situations like this are actually counter-productive.

The fact that "allies" made the request seems patronizing/paternal/maternal in a situation with peers -- not children.

If one or more black students felt too impacted by recent events to take exams, then that individual or individuals can make that decision and make the request.

The idea that a professor gets in trouble for treating everyone equally (particularly when one group of students make a request for another group of students) is troubling.

I find it a little amazing that the blacks routinely get discriminated against because of their very names in faceless evaluations but this professor apparently is dumber than all the racists because he can't tell who is who. Let's see... Kaitlin, Jenna, Allison, Cody, Dillon... eh... Jada, Kiara, DeAndre, Malik. It's so confusing!

Seems like a dumb situation all around. People who can be verified from Minneapolis perhaps should get some leeway in testing, more time to take the test or what have you, but being black or white in and of itself should have no bearing on who gets leeway. Just dumb college kids and their dumb professor.
