This is basically what I’m saying too. The smarter people advising him are likely dampening his expectations on calling the Defense secretary and expecting the Army to send 20,000 troops to DC before the inauguration to keep Biden From the White House.

More than likely what he tries to do starts with the Trump States and then moves to him issuing Executive Orders that can be legitimized through the Supreme Court and he also needs other institutions to fall in line to be successful in staying in power (Senate, and States that will not certify on behalf of Biden). The military will follow the law and court orders. Trumps advisors know that.

The Senate will remain vital as well for ensuring no emergency bills get passed that undermine a Trump executive order regarding the election.

Lastly as mentioned Trump needs States to deny certifying their elections. People like Gregg Abbott and Desantis in Florida are vitally important. The Supreme Court will likely acknowledge the State’s role in their electors deciding independently and that really is the main trigger for how Trump can MAYBE pull off a stay in power if he loses to Biden.

Lastly and the easiest part will be if Trump is successful in having the States deny certifying the election will be the House voting (12th amendment states one vote per state) with a simple Republican majority to select Trump as president which legitimately makes Trump the president again even if he loses.

I think this is the more likely route rather than just calling the military but boy... it’s not an easy task. He needs a lot of people to fall in line on a short timeline. Watch the states on election night first for any funny business in certifying the results. Then watch to see if Trump issues EO’s... then it’s anyone’s guess from that point on.

The role of violence regardless is very unclear at this point imo. Whether it be right wing nut case followers, a Deputized Trump military branch (national guard from a Trump state), or someone else. I think it’s more likely people like Bannon, Barr, and Roger Stone are helping him craft schemes to do something smarter than brutal violence. If any of them read the 12th amendment though the answer is right there if you look hard enough.

But that being said, I do not think for a minute that Trump is smart and skilled enough to pull this off regardless. This is very difficult and I’ve seen no indication that there is the competence necessary to pull something like this off.

Do you people realise how insane it is to actually believe Trump would do anything like this? He didn't even want to be president, he took it on to redress the insane corporatist immigration and trade policies because the country refused to let him lose, and lord did he try, but he really will just walk away, whether that is next year or 2025.

Trump is just riding the wave and of course hes not smart enough but he will hold on to the raft until end.

His entire presidency has hinged on sucking the life and soul of of the republican party in the name of being an R and doing enough of their crazy stuff to allow it. Guys like mcconnell ARE who they are since trump plays to their needs.

Trump will stumble into it but with things like abbot desantis mcconnell justice roberts he might be able to cobble enough to give it a go. He has enough of a framework to try and in that moment of desperation you sorta say it here

Many times the romans were faced with a last minute situation of returning to some sort of people run republic or with an emperor.

When claudius became emperor it was a cloud of dust and the idea that the praetorian guard maintain their positions. Without an emperor the praetorian guard were nothing.

Without trump slimebags like mcconnell and graham are his modern day praetorian guard and are nothing.. You even have chief justice Roberts getting the role of gratus. A supreme court stamp and its all good.

So you are saying fall in line and when its a cloud of dust fog of war these guys can fall in line quick if self serving and technicalities.

I think the big key here is knowing what happens in these situations if repugs lose senate and house seats in November. Will those be contested as well?

I read that in atlanta they closed 80 polling places in black community since march.
Now 16k registered voters from 5 precincts have to vote at one location and the polling machines are down there? Clear suppression.

mail in ballots arent even counted ? What kind of banana republic is this?

Eh...I think we’re venturing too far into conspiracy theory now. There are a lot of people in government that would ensure a transition of power if it comes to it.

Not to mention, I don’t think Trump would mind if he lost. Sure, he’ll claim illegitimacy and bias and everything else, but at the end of the day, he’ll step down. There’s more money and notoriety in it for him as the “cheated” loser than there is as the “cheating” winner. He can go out and buy OANN, rename it Trump network and create his own narrative for four years as his cult follows his every move.

And, the likelihood of him being well-thought of after another four years is slim. The economy will definitely turn, there will be more strife, not to mention that the Coronavirus is still raging and could be after the election. Why put up with having to deal with that, when he can go back to his favored position of telling everybody that everything sucks without him in power?

No, he’ll b**** and moan, maybe make a show of having to get “dragged” out of office, might even resign immediately after losing, but he’ll leave if the margin isn’t close like Bush/Gore.

I don't think even Trump is stupid enough to try and do this. He knows he doesn't have a lot of support. He also knows that if he tried to pull this ish, he'd most likely get Caesared right in the oval office.

what if the margin is close? With voter suppression/ mail suppression it could be close.

I agree that he would want to cut bait but even hitler waited a while before he finally killed himself.
To that extent I disagree with you from point of view trump will try to stay on as long as he can at all costs. Being president is the ultimate for a guy like trump. He would drink the blood of orphans if he thought it would do something. He is not going anywhere without a fight.

Call it conspiracy theory but to lou and dobro point he doesnt need much more than a well placed desantis or mcconnell or justice Roberts.

Trump will play all the things you say but only when the door is shut completely and the us marshals / military are having him at gunpoint.

He will try to play martyr and he has no problems having people die on his behalf in name of hold on. Hopefully no one falls for it.

Yes, but it’s important to understand what the constitution actually says to understand what is or is not possible. I was very clear that I don’t think he can pull it off because of competence and the level of collusion in the party would take extreme planning and execution.

To your point no he didn’t really want to be president and I’m sure he hates the actual job now. However he knows if he’s not re-elected he will likely be charged with crimes at least at the state level. I doubt he thinks he’ll go to jail but regardless he has ALOT to lose by losing his office. That’s the only reason I believe he’d kill and or destroy the fabric of our democracy just to serve his own interest.

No I don’t think he can pull it off. No I don’t think the media should talk about this like I am.

HARD YES that Nancy Pelosi, Schumer, Biden’s camp, and Democratic leaders at the state level should plan like hell for these disaster scenarios. They need to be prepared like it’s going to happen.

because he’s respected so many rules for the last 70 years, right? He’s never tried to get away with any shenanigans before, and it’s not like he just removed all the nonpartisan watchdogs in the executive branch or anything. I’m totally with you: If he loses, he will magically become a new human being and have the first gracious moment of his life, exiting stage left. I will probably choke up as the healing begins and he pledges to support Biden.

You don't really believe that do you? That they will pursue charges against him? It's pure political theatre, a very short period after he leaves office, it will disappear like kaiser soze.

And he knows it's all BS, they all do, these people talk to each other quite amicably, then go on camera and say comically ridiculous things about each other that none of them believe.

Politics turns the majority of people into 8 year olds, which is why the politicians talk to us like they think we're 8 year olds.

Trump doesn't need to be smart enough - there are people advising him who are smart enough to figure this out.

If Trump & co can challenge enough of the state elections - Florida, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin - and get the SC to claim that mail in votes shouldn't be counted, or the election was fraudulent and therefore can not be certified, wouldn't that result in the House making Trump president under the 12th amendment?

Considering he's hired illegal immigrants and also as president expanded a foreign worker program that Trump Organization uses also that he manufactured a lot of his stuff in the PRC and even boasted in a tweet he was going to create more jobs in China, as President. I don't think he was forced to address any of those policies.

Also as far as him just walking away there is very likely a sealed indictment waiting for him from Southern District of NY as a coconspirator with Cohen for the Stormy Daniels affair.

I think it is within the realm of possibility that Trump doesn't leave voluntarily but I think the military has made it clear they support the Constitution and not him. Also I think that Roberts knows the future of the USSC as a coequal branch of the government and legitimacy is on the line if he allows it to back Trump in a questionable grab for power. The justices of the USSC will be there after Trump leaves whether it is next year or four years from now. I don't think he wants history to record that he subsumed the court to the president. Yes I know the Rhenquist court did but Roberts isn't Rhenquist.

The events of the last few weeks have been showing the fault lines of perceived support for Trump. That doesn't mean that through enough obfuscation Trump doesn't try to remain in power but don't think support of the military or the courts is guaranteed. For that matter if the current trends continue many of the GOP governors might look to save their own political futures than risk everything on Trump.

You are probably right, but I don't think this will stop him from trying. He is the kind of man that will make the world burn if it suits his whim. While he may not succeed in retaining power, he will still encourage his armed supporters to take to the streets to contest the evil democrats from stealing the election from him - and they will believe it was stolen.

How do you deal with angry armed Trump supporters? Their numbers could easily exceed police departments in many places - police departments largely sympathetic to their cause.

The guys personal attorney is currently in jail for crimes Trump ordered him to do. Yes I think there are crimes that he has committed that the State of New York will pursue.

Will Joe Biden's AG pursue crimes against Trump... probably not unless it's so insane they cannot look away. Even then, BECAUSE OF THE POLITICS, they will have to appoint a special counsel who will likely be known as a Republican who will probably act more like Mueller where he'll give Trump the benefit of the doubt on anything and everything before taking steps to bring charges.

So do I believe he'll go to jail... no. I think he'll actually BENEFIT from the politics that will make it hard to prosecute.

Do I believe he is a criminal with serious liability.... Yes. Thats a pretty widely known fact. I think what is likely is state charges where he probably faces fines, and losing his business. I do not believe the Trump organization as a "Real Estate" company will have to shut its doors due to the white collar crimes committed via that entity.

That is what I believe is a pretty reasonable take, but still one that Trump still knows is a serious liability to him if he does not win re-election.

That's the scenario I've been talking about.

-Enough States refuse to certify election to where 270 cannot be met by either candidate
-Constitution then states the House will then vote on president with ONE VOTE per state where Republicans have the majority.
-If House refuses to hold a vote, on March 4th the Senate votes to name VP Pence President, and Pence is free to nominate a VP (could be Trump)

Now how this all plays out is where the guessing game starts. We could write a wall of text here just on state election certification. That's the tricky part, and how states would likely need to be in recount territory in order to even be able to legally hold up the certification.

Then there is the House's role which throws in the big question mark of Nancy Pelosi's role. How much power will she wield in this scenario? Can the Supreme Court order her to hold a vote on the House floor (I don't think they can but that's never been tested).

Then there is the role of VP Pence who is the "President of the Senate" who swears in new Senators. That's a big deal there on its own.

Just so many factors where it's really hard to see a perfect storm, and perfect collusion with all the Republicans at the State and Federal level.

Does Trump have the competence to pull this off or even think about this option??... Hell no. Do Steve Bannon, Barr, Roger Stone, and Mitch McConnell have the competence to plan this out??... probably enough brain power to come up with the plan, but do they have enough support from top to bottom to fully execute??... Even then with maniacal planning from someone like Steve Bannon, I don't think they have the ability to pull this off.

Still I think Pelosi and the Dems should plan as if they do.

And before people start saying we are crazy libs blah blah blah.... keep in mind that this has actually happened before. This is in the constitution and has precedent.

I wouldn't be surprised if there is a tacit deal between an incoming Biden Amdin. and Trump in a close election that they won't pursue charges against him if he leaves the office peacefully and convinces his supporters to accept the result.

Guaranteed that Trump will try everything he can to secure a high level of immunity during the transition. I do not think it will be private behind the scenes either. I think you'll see scare tactics that'll freak out the media used waiving around powers he doesn't have in order to get the Biden camp to make concessions about immunity for prosecutions. I 100% believe Trump will do this. If you were a criminal president with legal liability it makes sense.

I think the only reason he's fighting to be president is because he's afraid of being persecuted for his crimes.

Being President gives him power to avoid this.

I think if the Democrats win and focus on moving past Trump he'll bow out. Not gracefully, but he'll focus on his news network and all of his other things. I think what will be more interesting is if he loses big there isn't much he can do.

The GOP will even turn on him and toss him aside if say the polls reflect reality in November then Trump is going to get slaughtered and at that point there really is nothing for him to do.

If it is close things could get interesting but a close loss is still a loss and for Trump to perform this coup he's going to need the military and I really don't think the leadership in the Military is that far gone or that far partisan. Maybe I'm wrong though.
