I agree that there is a strong argument to be made that there is a difference between Confederates and slave owners that were founding fathers. However it is still an arbitrary line depending on perspective. Washington owned black people. He had teeth ripped out of his slaves mouth so he could use the teeth as his own. We have to come to some sort of cultural understanding or agreement on how to handle all of this and we are not there yet.

I agree that schools should not be named after Robert E Lee or Stonewall Jackson. I am fully in favor of renaming those schools as well. However do we rename schools that are named after Jefferson? Washington? Hell even Lincoln did not have a high opinion of minorities.

To be clear I am not saying the solution is do nothing (as I have heard some conservatives state using my argument).

I agree with most of this but the difference between the Confederacy and Jefferson and Washington is the Civil War.

I have no issue with the confederate statues per say but they should not be publicly funded or in or on tax funded places.

Corporate America is risk adverse. Some mid level executive told some junior executive to scrub everything that could draw an angry email from the library.

It has absolutely nothing to do with "taking a stand" or white guilt or the relative merits of the film. If HBO thought "Birth of A Nation" would make viewers happy and wouldn't upset anyone they'd be showing it 24/7.

I guarantee you someone weasel in middle management looked at how many views Gone With The Wind had over the last month before deciding the risk outweighed the reward. If it were "Joker" or whatever the most popular film is now they'd release some bullshit statement about taking a stand for art and keep on showing it.

I'm not sure that arts and literature or simply speech should be decided by consensus. Slippery slope.

I don’t mind the confederate monuments in areas where there is a historically strong connection such as battle fields.

I have a huge issue with confederate monuments outside government buildings or courthouses.

Confederate soldiers shouldn’t be venerated but should be allotted the same as any other important historical period or group.

I had relatives that fought for the Confederacy but never really felt any sense of pride or superiority because of it.

I have their writings and mostly they were dirt poor, had very limited education on the war and were scared of famine. They didn’t view themselves as radicals or traitors.

One ended up marrying a former slave and moved to California. The other died of malnutrition.

The only discussion of black people I read was a concern that if the slaves were freed the South would burn.

On the other side I had relatives that were very high up Nazis.

So to say I come from evil stock is kind of an understatement. So when I hear people complain about someone “coming from a bad family” I just kind of smile.

    That is a interesting genealogy.

We pretty much agree on all of this but those statues should be privately funded.

I can get with removal of the most racist mo fos and relocating them to the Smithsonian but it seems like decapitating Cristobal Colon is a thing.
If we kill the Spanish queen or Columbus, we would not exist!

Some of my Trump supporting friends in Mn post memes about Liberals are trying to erase their heritage by taking down Confederate Statues. I’ve pointed out to them that MN was the first state to volunteer to fight for the Union and also still has a Confederate Battle Flag that was taken from the First Virginians at Gettysburg in the MN history Center. They don’t display it anymore but refuse to give it back to Virginia

    That is a wild understatement.

GWTW is Lost Cause Propaganda. The Civil War was all about State’s Rights, was started by Northern Aggression, Slaves on the plantation never had it so good, etc.

I live minutes away from a gorgeous mill featured in GWTW, always been a fun talking point. I haven’t seen the movie in years (probably never watched the whole thing) but if they somehow glorified slavery or depicted the slaves enjoying themselves...then screw it. Glad that HBO removes it from their library. Private company and no one’s enjoyment of cinema will be lessened because of it.

also yes remove all the confederate monuments. I enjoy living in the south (mostly for climate and hospitality) but the confederacy was a rebellious nation devoted to despicable farming methods. As far as I’m concerned, it was an act of treason to put them next to government buildings in the first place.

If a movie is violent and gory it comes with warnings. I don't see the issue with posting something in the description page of the movie stating that yes some of the depictions shown here may be racist.

Confederate flags and monuments below on in museums not on public land. They are a symbol of hate and it's just unimaginable how people try to rationalize it given the history of what it stood for.
